Just bought first motorhome
Apologies if this is a really daft question. We’ve just driven our new (to us) motorhome for about half an hour and stopped to make a coffee and there’s a roaring noise under the bonnet. I’m not very technical (clearly) but I’ve taken the keys out so I can’t think what/how this could be. Help!

I wonder what the logic is behind this, as surely it will only cool the water that's ensconced in the radiator at switch off, as the water pump won't be running to circulate it around the cooling system ?🤷‍♂️

It stops things boiling over.

The fan will also draw air to cool the engine sat behind the fan.

I am only joking but 'Ensconced' you do realise this is Motorhome Fun forum and most of us struggle with anything more than four letter words. I actually looked up the definition, which makes it all the more humorous:

establish or settle (someone) in a comfortable, safe place.
"Agnes ensconced herself in their bedroom"

So, nothing further to add

Geoff

PS. I tend to agree, the fan running will only cool the radiator, but then maybe that is what Fiat are aiming for.

The fan keeps going as the now non circulating coolant gets extremely hot from the engine that also has no airflow.

Automatic system to save a boiling radiator, nothing to worry about.

The Smart Roadster does it but it's the secondary air pump that keeps on running for a few seconds after switch off - a petrol engine thing I think so I doubt that many mohos have it fitted.

They have 2 fans one for the air con and one for the radiator (they are next to each other) it is usually the air con fan that is going longer and starts up first.

Roaring noise-
Fans don’t normally roar.

Sounds more like its a modern diesel and the engine is going through a regeneration to clean the DPF/CAT, and yes, the fan will be running.

Make sure that if you’ve been driving at slow low engine rev speeds for aconsiderable time, that you take it for a short spin at much higher revs.

These things need the cobwebs blown out once in a while.

I wonder if that true??

I only ask because my 1989 T25 Diesel has an extra electric water circulation pump, (never heard it running though) as well the electric radiator fans??

PS. I must admit, I have never heard of one on a Ducato.

The water will be slowly circulating due to convection while it is hot enough to keep the thermostat open. Hot water will rise through the engine and cool water flow down the radiator. This is the normal direction when the pump is running but it also happens when it stops.

I love descriptive words like 'ensconced' and often use it.
Its a word that conveys something or someone that is snuggled down somewhere and not just there. (y)

Agree with Old Rat sounds more like a regeneration cycle for the DPF , happens on ours too on short runs or after a longer run followed by a short spell driving slow .

Cooling fan, perfectly normal on modern vehicles 👍
It might run for 15 minutes or more.
You have no control, the engine knows best 😂
We hadn’t noticed this ….My cousin heard it when our van was new… and put the fear of God into us! We spoke to our dealer & he said don’t listen…. To your cousin or the engine!!!
It’s the cooling fan.

Are you getting hung up on semantics? 😁

Apologies to you as this may seem like a really daft question too... Did you go for the 5 year old Hymer, or another vehicle. ???

Happy New Van :drinks:(y)

Cheers

DPF Regeneration?

Sounds very much like it's trying to complete an unfinished DPF regeneration.

Our Ducato (2021, 2.3, 140hp, Euro 6d) does this occasionally. The description "roaring sound" is very accurate. Much louder than normal electric cooling fan noise. It's louder and more urgent sounding than normal engine tickover noise. Typically scenario is where we've pulled up and stopped at services after a long run. It's loud enough for other people to give it a quizzical look, especially if you've locked up and left the van. Typically lasts for about 5 minutes. You can sense and smell accompanying heat being generated.

If you think think the fan not stopping is scary . . .

In a hot country, we had a car that when the engine got too hot, (needle in the red) the actual engine would not stop, even with the keys out . . .

I believe this is known as an “Italian tune up”, take it for a good half hour thrash at high revs, this is needed to get all the emissions systems back into full working order.

When the engine gets too hot particles in the cylinder glow red hot and even with the ignition off fuel will be ignited and detonate! This is not good as the shock waves can damage mechanical parts!
