Good afternoon,

Just wondering what we need to do to be able to take the dog with us. I’ve looked on the government website and it’s says vaccination and rabies but I remember reading something about going to a vets abroad 10 days after gojng to a U.K. vet?

We usually travel to Europe in September for a month - Germany mostly.

Appreciate your help.

Deb

Yes vaccination and rabies and then you need to get AHC paperwork for each trip, it lasts for 4 months but only one trip, these are anything from £100 upwards.
Before return to uk you need a vet to worm the dog at least one day before travel and no more than 5 days.

Thanks for replying
Is the AHC paperwork from the U.K.?
How do you know which vet to go to abroad?
Do you think tunnel you travel

The AHC is got before travel from uk and a popular place is Abbeywell vets( £100 for first AHC and then £75 for any after that) in Folkestone which is handy if using the tunnel. We find tunnel easiest because your dog stays with you in the motorhome and it’s quick.
Plenty of vets listed for return worming if you search on Fun.

Do you know the vaccination history (if any) of your dog. This may be helpful.
Also you need to talk to your vet for full details of what treatment(s) you dog will need & the time factors for the injections & paperwork, in particular for Rabies.
Also your dog needs to be chipped by law & other factors.

The reason you need an AHC is to allow the dog into the EU from the UK. As Manic says, it's £100 a go, if you are lucky, many vets charge £250.

While you are in the EU you can go to a vet and get an EU Pet Passport, for about £50, that lasts 10 years. It can be used instead of an AHC to allow the dog into the EU from the UK. If you are thinking of regular trips abroad, it's definitely worth it. Many people on here, including me, have done this. Do a search for 'EU Pet Passport' for more info.

To travel to Europe, your dog needs
An identity chip, implanted by a UK vet. For your own benefit the chip should be registered on a UK chip data base.
A rabies inoculation, documented on some form of medication list.

There are two methods of taking a dog to Europe. Firstly an Animal Health Certificate, issued by a Uk vet. As has been said, Abbeywell in Folkstone come highly recommended. The AHC is time limited in it’s validity, I think to 4 months. The other way is with a Pet Passport issued by a European vet, which means you will need an AHC to get to Europe in the first place. The subject of EU pet passports has been covered on the forum extensively. A good place to start is posts by maz

Having got to Europe, you are then faced with the regulations regarding returning a dog to the UK. This basically means having a vet administer a specific worming tablet within a pre determined time period, approx 1 to 5 days before you return. This must be documented on the travel document you using.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE check all the details I have given yourself. There is plenty of information on the forum and on the.gov website. Worst case scenario for getting it wrong, is that you could be refused travel, or heaven forbid your dog is placed in quarantine. Excise caution with what you can read on Facebook.

Don’t worry to much, thousands of dogs and cats travel backwards and forwards each year, so it can’t be that difficult.
Good luck

I think most things to do with pet travel abroad have been covered by previous posters. One thing I would add is that the AHC has to be used to enter the EU within 10 days of its issue.

An EU Pet Passport will make future trips much easier, and Germany is a pretty easy country to obtain one in without ’residency’ issues. However, I believe that German vets will want to administer a further rabies vaccination when issuing a Pet Passport.

Thank you so much.
I have read up on the forum but confused as some people were saying places in Europe don’t do a passport unless you have residency.

We weren’t planning on the dog but… plans change and ‘ flexibility is the key’ ;)

She has a chip and some vaccinations but not for the last 2 years.
1) get vaccinated
2) rabies jab from my vet?
3) get the AHC from from folkston
4) travel and find somewhere to get a pet passport to come back

I would stay with her if she couldn’t come back and she thanks you very much for helping.

Thanks again
