Hi,
We are interested in buying a Hymer 2014 B544, the owner states that the maximum weight is 3500Kg.
Does anybody know what the maximum capacity of the motorhome is likely to be ? I accept that it will need rebadging.
Regards

I have many spare keys.
Full carpet set which I have not used.

Mot expiry 26-11-2020

Tax is £165 per year

This motorhome has been a joy to travel in around Europe without any hiccups at all, what ever it needed was done and more. Being only 6.5m long it does fit in most parking spaces if you can get it in backwards for the short overhang, I’ve been all over Europe including up in the Pyrenees and have got where ever I wanted to be.
I used to get an average of 31mpg tested over 10k miles with continental tyres, with the new Michelin tyres I appear to be getting around 28-30mpg so far but have done little miles on them.

I never had to plug in to EHU unless it was in with a pitch price, it is very comfortable with the large layout and having friends around for dinner, there is a third pull out bed from one of the benches. There are four seatbelts. It is very well insulated and is very warm in the winter and cool in summer.

The satellite system is excellent and I have had U.K. tv down as far as Benidorm. The 22’ tv is not in the sale as it has a problem but it works as it should and can be in the van when sold

The Motorhome is in very good condition but does have signs of wear and tear according to its age.

I am disabled and the motorhome has disabled hand controls professionally made and fitted which just bolt on and can easily be taken off which I can do. The motorhome can still be driven with them on by anyone as the foot pedals are not affected and if needed the controls can be left on.
Awaiting a wash and polish

This is a very reluctant sale for a very genuine reason.

I am in Cornwall And will be as accommodating as possible for anyone to view the Motorhome which is located on my drive near Truro/Redruth. I can pick up from a train/bus station or Newquay airport and can even accommodate serious buyers. I can send pictures of what you need to see and can also video call and show you around it.

Any enquires please pm me.

You would have to be very careful on the payload on a B544 at 3500kg....

this will give you some idea...

Ours is a 2014 B544 and it depends on the chassis and wheels. We are on 15inch wheels and the AMC35L (light) chassis. We had to change the tyre size from 215/70 to 225/70 and have rear air assist suspension fitted to go 3850kg which is the maximum for the light chassis.
The main problem with B544’s, along with a lot of motorhomes, is the rear axle capacity being easily reached. Standard it’s 2000kg but goes to 2240kg with the above modifications.
Check wheels/chassis, it may be a 16inch/heavy (AMC37H) that is rated at 3500kg for licence purposes.

Hettie's Crew,

Thanks for that, I have asked for a photo of the weight plate and the tyres, I hope this will give me a clue, but your answer raises two points;-

1. We have a desire to be away for months at a time so how do you find a 3850Kg weight limit, is it a problem for you ?

2. How do you tell which chassis you have ? presumably it is stamped somewhere, but where ?

I think that the same chassis is limited to 3750kg max with no modifications?

We’ve (2 adults and a dog) spent months at a time away and never had a problem. We also have jacks fitted and our weight with us onboard, fully loaded/fuelled ready for the off is 3600kg.
Check the Alko plate at the bottom for chassis type.

Out of interest, what’s your typical rear axle weight when ready for the off? Maybe useful to the OP to see how much over the original plated load capacity (if at all).

We got weighed by SVTECH at Peterborough Show when Jim arranged for them to do free weight checks but we also use the King George Dock weight scales. You just drive up to the gate tell them you’re getting weighed and it’s just beyond the gate on the right.

1970kg, too close to the original 2000kg max for comfort, that’s why we went to 2240kg with the tyres/air.

We use North East Truck and Van for our services and they did the cambelt change. We had the five year service/mot done at the same time and it came to just over £1000, the parts alone for the genuine Fiat cambelt kit came in at £350 plus VAT and it was quite involved being an A Class.
NET&V have been very reasonably priced for a Fiat Professional garage.

1 front axle max, 2 rear axle max, 5500= max train weight ie vehicle plus trailer and 3500 is your max permissible load weight.
You must have the extra Goldsmitt front springs to be 2000kg rather than the standard 1850kg.

So presumably this means that it is a lightweight chassis and therefore the maximum weight upgrade would be to 3850 by changing the tyres and installing air assist suspension ?
Agree ?

You can uprate to 3850 without any mods.
You would only need mods to increase the rear axle load assuming it is an Al-Ko chassis to increase the rear axle to 2240kg you would need air assist or full air on the rear if wheels are 16" tyres will probably be OK, if 15" you will need 225 width tyres.

Not sure about that Lenny HB, the Hymer weight plate shown indicates the rear axle is the standard 2000kg and the front is higher rated to 2000kg from the standard 1850kg because it will have been fitted with the Goldsmitt (?Spelling) springs.
This is exactly how ours was as new and it was rated as 3700kg from the factory. When we enquired with SV Tech they said it couldn’t go to 3850kg without the rear axle/tyre mods.

my Carthago had plates for 3650 and 3850 (just the sum of the axles) with no mods other than 16" wheels which it came with....
as it happens, i run it at 3500 (for my own reasons) but i could uprate easily at anytime.

Agree with Lenny’s #24. That’s exactly what I got from SV Tech. If you have 15” wheels (215/70) theoretically you could increase the rear axle to 2060, but you would still need someone to bless this so you could display an uprated data plate.

If the axle is rated and plated at 2000kgs it won’t matter what tyres go on the end of it if the axle itself isn’t modified in some way, like air assist.
