Anyone willing to share how they make best use the ‘Search for sites’ app please? I’ve only ever put in my current location and looked at places to stop in the surrounding area. However in Sept I want to plan a bit more so will be looking at a route down through France to Northern Italy & possibly back up through Switzerland /Germany /Belgium stopping at a mixture of aires, day parking & simple campsites. I’m wondering if there’s a way to do this on the app & save it:unsure:.

Also any other tips on getting more use from the app is very welcome.

If you are a subscriber you can d/l the list to your Garmin/Tom Tom etc then all you have to do is put in the number relating to stopover ..EX: S 24500S instead of all the co ordinates. I think it’s a brilliant feature.

Just subscribed after a few years absence(y). That sounds like a great feature. Not sure if I can download to my sat nav but I'll look into it, thanks👍

What kind of sat nav do you have?

I have a garmin one for motorhomes and also there's a built in one on the 'new to us' Carthago but that one is still a bit of a mystery at the moment. I usually work things out by logic & trial & error rather than read the instructions but the built in one is anything but logical:LOL:

Don't use search for sites , but we use park4night which is similar but what we do is not plan sites but just go where we want then do as you are doing with s4s and get it up and search around where we are, never failed to find somewhere to stop.

Now that I can do (y) . I guess I'm just getting a bit over excited & wanting to plan a bit more where we might stop.

Someone on here says how marvellous Gravelines aire it is so must try that one;):giggler:

If you pay for Park4Night (10€) you can select the kind of sites you want.
Aires or sites - services or surrounded by nature 3,4or 5* recommended sites.
All you need do is filter the menus

That will be me. You won't regret it (y) ;)

Used search4sites for our 2 month France trip earlier this year. The My Lists function is great.
I set up a “potentials” list. When we decided which direction we would be heading in the next few days we identified a shortlist of possible Aires. Much easier for planning and if we got to one we didn’t like then by going back into the list, clicking on the next one, the sat nav link and we were directed to the next one.
Also have a list for each holiday and also a list of all the sites we’ve been to over the last couple of years.

That’s the sort of thing I was wondering if possible. I’ll try it, thanks👍

Just an add-on to searching.

When we have picked a target for the night then in the last few kms of the route we also keep eyes open for any likely alternative, so that if target is not up to scratch we can backtrack.

and you can click the google maps icons and it will pull you right over to google maps
And once Google maps opens you can save the location to a folder, so you can find it later.

Having used S4S and P4N we prefer the latter as it's kept more up to date - recently in Ireland we found that some of the S4S ones no longer existed or had barriers. Hubby has previously contacted the owner but he's not interested in keeping it up to date so it's P4N for us.

Interesting, I downloaded S4S a few years ago but haven’t needed to use it much recently so wasn't aware. I suppose it’s only as good as the people using it keeping it up to date then.

From where I am tonight to Ripon tomorrow
Just as an aside, unless you're in a hurry might be worth considering a different route. Bedale's worth a visit, Thorpe Perrow arboretum nearby, Masham, breweries and market square, West Tanfield pub by river then North Stainley and into Ripon.

Yup, the P4N owner(s) are more on the ball to keep it up to date as much as possible, eg when a new one is submitted they don't include it until it's been verified whereas S4S often has ones put on which can't take MHs or campers.

Search for sites took me 100miles west on south coast of spain to a camp with a similar name that was shut ! till season opened in may. A pack of 3 vans from germany also arrived with the same problem after me.
Luckily a great car park by the sea was available 50 yds round the corner, and I had the best 3 night there.

Very strange as the owner seems to be quite active with updates etc on the search for sites facebook group.
As for adding sites that cant take campers or motorhomes? That seems confusing as what else is there?

I have sent Ian at SFS several change requests and usually within a day or two have had a reply informing me it’s been updated. I do a re sync and sure enough the changes have been made.

Like most of these apps, they are only as good as the people (I.e. you and me) who update the information. S4S is v good in the U.K., but P4N was far more useful to us in France where it seems to have a much bigger user group. Many municipal campsites which had been established for years were not even listed by S4S. I decided not to spend my holiday doing their job for them and deferred to P4N instead.

Just an aside, the guy who runs p4n is very obligeing, although he is in Holland I have emailed him a few times and got a reply within a couple of hours, and I am only on the free one.
