MH
dont own one yet
I realise this is far from an exact science and is subject to supply & demand. But having agreed to buy our motorhome last weekend, hubby is now wondering how much it will depreciate in say, 5 years.
Is there a % guide? Roughly? Or any personal experience you can draw on?
(The MH we’re buying is a 3 yr old 4 belt 4 berth Rollerteam)

Our van is worth more now than we paid for it, new just over two years ago.

Our car, which we have agreed to trade in against a new one, ordered in June (yes, cars are suffering delays as well), is worth £500 more now.

Strange times, I’d never owned a vehicle that had gone up in value, now I’ve got two.🤷‍♂️

Like others in the last couple of years, I got more in P/X for my moho than I paid for it last August. Mind you I paid a lot more for the one I was changing to. First time I’ve experienced appreciation rather than depreciation with a vehicle. All down to supply and demand and it’s anyone’s guess how the market will move over the next five years.

In normal years if you bought it new you would lose the amount that was the vat + about £300 per annum, at the moment though ours is propably worth more then we paid for it in 2018 we paid £59,995 brand new this year they are around £76,000 ,next year the current rumour is a new one is £83,000.
However current economic conditions may have a affect on new and residual prices in time so I am just going to use and enjoy the motorhome and not worry about future values.

In more normal times I think it was generally 20% the first year then 5% a year. The way things have changed was totally unpredictable so I think there's no real idea what it will be worth. You've bought it now so whatever depreciation there is the more you use it the lower per use it will be!

At the moment they are going up in value and with new prices constantly increasing unlikely to change for a few years.
Our first van deprecated 5% a year over 6 years, last one 3% a year over 3 years, current van is worth more than we paid for it 5 years ago.

Well bought my 2008 bessacart e495 for £35000 but now only offered from £20000 to £28000 maximum from dealers and value on autotrader so depends what make you have to what theyll give you. I was also looking at buying for £55000 but still offered same value cos they all want to put £4000 or £ 5000 on to sell due to greed.

Surely its only worth what somebody is willing to pay for it ?

I get a van maybe 1 or 2 years old compared with new prices if you can get the van you want but there are ads out there with motorhomes from 2012/13/14 wanting more than the original price back then.

One example recently found a Laika ad for around 32 from 2016 same motorhome today want 36 and have removed the tv, gaslow, fiamma awning from the previous sale.

Don’t think 4-5k profit is excessive as they will need to check it over warranty it plus hold it in stock until it sells!!
I don’t think people appreciate how much it cost to run a business with premises would not want a lot of these dealers overheads.

You’re not wrong there. Everything automotive has been turned on it’s head recently.

We stretched our budget and made a confirmed ‘price protected’ order for a new MoHo in October 2021, and obtained a modest discount to bring the price in at just over £73k. Although the anticipated delivery date of April unsurprisingly came and went, I’ve run the same specification through the manufacturer’s online configurator a few times to see how it compared:
(£ is rounded % is actual compared to order price, and I’m told that unsurprisingly there is now no dealer discount available).

March £80k (+8.5%)
September £89k (+22%)
October £94k (+28%)

I wonder if it’ll go up again before we actually take delivery next week!

Same here ended up spending £20k over our max budget & had to pay quite a bit more the wrong side of £100k it's price protected and it was offset by the higher trade in price. At the rate they are going up in price it would have been silly to wait.

Many try and make £10000 out of a deal. I only lost £4000 on mine in 21/2 years so I did well!!!!!!!

I can what your saying but when you say your looking at spending £50000 to £60000 the attitude changes and they say oh ill give you more for yours now if you buy from me. The van came from them 4months ago theyve done all the work 300 miles on it since misses illness got worse so nearly same van i bought originally. Warranty waste of paper. Control panel went was told thats not covered. Cant use van without it so went to applejack to get brand new one at my expence.

Strange times, Main car Stealers :) are buying nearly new cars back to put in the showroom due to lack of new models coming out factories down to short supply of electronic parts that has hit the Fiat lines as well hence slow delivery of Ducato base chassis that is helping to keep MH values up, plus not everybody is buying into the Scalectric cars fad and are keeping hold of their IC powered models waiting for the hydrogen variants to start coming out, interesting times

Typically they would depreciate by 20% in year one and then 5% per year thereafter.
However at the moment the reverse seems to be true.

But obviously it can not last, over the next year or two or three or four the prices will stabilise.
Once the new electric vans come into the motorhome market and the diesel powered vans get banned from more and more areas (possibly entire countries for foreign vehicles) then the 2nd hand price will fall considerably.

Today I can get more for my 5 year old van than it cost new.
'Tomorrow' I expect it to have decreased by 20% plus 5% PA.
But hopefully by then I'll have had 15+ years of memories.

May have been true with cars in the past but never been the case with Motorhomes.
When we toyed with the idea of trading in our MH at about 4 years old it was roughly what we were offered as a trade in by Lowdhams.

Sounds like they are rip off merchants.
I think like all dealers they like a healthy margin and 4 years ago secondhand prices were lower than now. I think when you're looking at depreciation like the op one big factor is whether you sell privately or trade .
As I said it was a quote there's no way I would have sold at what they offered without trying to sell for a better price privately.

Last one we traded lost 3%/year over 3 years that was in 2017 but was with our Belgium dealer.

We bought a new motorhome Nov 21.
The price for 2023 is £20K more, which is an increase of 25% in less than two years.
I could easily sell our motorhome and get our money back.
But, the current situation is not normal and at some stage there will be a correction to the market.
When and by how much is the million dollar question.
