How many just use google maps in France and Spain

All the time in the car - however it occasionally takes us down some spectacularly narrow lanes to save 0.001Km, so have invested in Sygic satnav on an Android tablet for the MoHo.

Could you say a quick idea on price?

Google maps linked to stereo head unit screen via Apple CarPlay worked superbly when negotiating difficult south bound routes through places like Rouen in late June this year. I bought a large scale ring bound Philips map of France and plotted a route south with post it notes in it for next page on map, where we planned to stop, petrol stations etc etc. the combo worked really well. We only used the google map bit sparingly as we wanted to listen to music stored on the phone. Didn’t give us any “Krazy Ivans” on the way down and found us a puncture repair place on the way home…. But that’s another story!!

Cheers!

Honestly don't know why anyone uses anything but Google maps, always up to date, even tells you if there is holdups or stuff, where the filling stations are, cafes , and everything else you need to know all for free then when you get there you can still use it on foot or see where the next bus is, just total information not just a satnav.

Although you weren't asking me, I can say I have never seen any big loss of data never had to pay anymore or anything and in France you don't really need it to be switched on all the time as when you have decided your route you can just follow the signs untill you get near your destination.

I use a 10" galaxy tablet on the clipboard here and abroad. I find Google good but not perfect and the instructions are clear and timely. The screen size is great for a wider satellite view but the navigation is only suitable for cars so caution is needed on some roads.
Here I have Google running with a speedometer and a local radio station all through data, ok not pretty but works a treat.

I use Google Maps all the time. It's fast turning into the best sites app too.

Most every site in the land, reviews and instant directions to it. Just google campsites near me, or Campsites Near Bath etc.
Just googled Campsites Near Calais. You can use a list, or pick them off a map. Loads of choice, hundreds of reviews, one click directions. No Apps.

We use a combination of Google maps and Mapy. cz.
I have most of Europe downloaded on my phone with Mapy. cz. Its nearly as good as Google maps but doesn't need or use any data. Great for navigating when out in the sticks with no data available, and its free.

Not in my experience, some very out of date mapping in France, took me ages to find an aire... but agree with finding locations when at your destination.

Remember, no phone signal, no Google Maps.

We just use Apple Maps for the sat nav now.

Excellent.

Use it when nearing where we want to go. I use an Ohrex truck satnav but the search is rubbish when you are used to Google. I usually spend some time entering the gps points for the sites I want to visit into its "favourites" and then route there.

We tried apple maps and our garmin
sat nav recently in France but they both refused to give us a non toll route where as google maps was quite happy to off toll free routes, but then you have to double check where it’s sending you with an actual map and put in via points so you don’t end up on some single track road up a mountain 😂4688D81B-483D-4570-8E66-74272450DF06.jpeg

I used my Garmin satnav and then the map on my iPhone when the satnav either took me down a dead end road or took me round in circles which happened a few times.
Using the map on my phone was a last resort but on every occasion, it got me out of the S!
I’m going to save the dashcam footage of one occasion and will upload when I can. It involved an occasion where after around a mile, the road gets narrower, locals stare in disbelief and it’s too late to even look for a turn around point! I’m sure we’ve all been there.
Mine involved a delivery wagon, a narrow street in a hill, an over hanging roof eaves and 3 x builders to guide me through with about an inch either side to spare. 🙄 thanks again satnav!

I generaly use google maps here in france but find in town it tries to tell you all the street names, not only that it does it feneticly and very badly so i have turned the language into french which personally (as I speak french although badly) I find much better.

If you are worried about data I have found TomTom GO on my phone works well, I got that to use while i was both in the states and Australia, where data is a bit expensive and often you are out of signal range anyway, i did look at buying a proper GPS, but to include world maps is very expensive.

Where the subscription for tomtom go is fairly cheap and you can download the latest maps for anywhere.

Last few times we have used Google Maps but we’ve not liked it for long distances - we either seem to get Tolls or the most direct route regardless of size of road - more than once it tried to take us down a farm track or drainage ditch. Usually late at night.
I’ve decided to go back to paper maps for route planning, happy to use Google maps for local forays.

You can set preferences to avoid things like tolls, but yes google does take you some strange places at times, as with all gps's you have to use a brain and double check the route to avoid silly errors.

Someone i know did an extra 50kms detour becouse he had motorways as a preference, if he had looked at the route beforehand, he would have spotted that he only needed to use 8kms of dual carriageway to cut off a complete loop of motorway, and he wasn't using google maps.

GOOGLE is my friend and I don't care if it listening to me or watching me or selling all my data.

Google knows where all the Burger Kings and Burger Ranches are in the whole wide world...
