Hi all
Getting our first motorhome. Picking it up tomorrow all excited. Get 14 days free insurance, but for the quote the guy was asking for annual mileage, the first year what's the average mileage for camper.

Depends on how much you drive it :)

Ok whats the sort of average i said about 10k we plan on a big road trip round Europe

We got away with 5000 this year, with one trip to Weston Super Mare and one trip to Benidorm via northern Spain, Portugal and Gibraltar. We usually go twice a year though and have 10000 miles allowed for that (y)

I always tell my insurance co. 8k miles. We never go over that and last year we went down as far as Murcia Spain and later in the year southern Croatia.

If you put 10,000 there will be an option to call the insurance company and increase it if you think you are going to exceed it (for a fee of course :D )

How the hell do they know? I’m not interested in defrauding or anything, but I don’t believe anyone has ever checked mine (car or MH). And if there’s no checks in place, why bother asking?!

They only check if you claim. MOT and service records

Lower premium for lower miles. Come the fateful day you need the insurance the first thing they will do is check the MOT records for actual mileage, if they can weasel out of paying they will certainly try (may not get away with it, but will certainly give it a go).

I haven’t tried on the MH, but on my other car I had a 3K limit and was about to break it, phoned up and it cost £30 for an extra 2K miles, so I think just ask for a reasonable guesstimate and then just upgrade later if needed.

Started off at 5000, had to "upgrade" it twice. So went for 10,000 and (almost) exceeded that so in the end went for unlimited. As said, bit more expensive but worth peace of mind.

We do quite a lot of long-distance touring - although maybe not so much this year due to commitments. We'll see.

We usually go for 8000......................there is of course an admin fee if you increase mid policy.

BUT I did read in the small print somewhere that if you exceed the amount (which could easily be done by accident) then in the event of a claim they will charge you the difference that you should have paid, rather than invalidate the policy. Not a bad result if this is indeed the case.

Don't presume you can increase the limit, we got ripped off a couple of years ago, decided last minute to go to Norway, worked out it would be 6K miles, this would take us over our 6K limit, rang insurers, we could only add 2K, so had no choice but to start a new years insurance 3 months early (with a different insurer)

The reason we pick fixed miles was mainly we couldn't find unlimited at anything like realistic price and the price dropped by about a third lowering from 10K to 6K miles

We bought our first van 50 weeks ago and got cover for 6000 miles. We've done 4500 but never used the 'van from late November till March if that's any help.
I was just wondering if I tell them I'll be doing 6000 in the next year if those 'unused 1500 miles' would be noticed!

I play that game, 1 st year I had 8000 last year 10,000, just renewed so went for 8000 as I had a 1000 in the bank.
Unless it's over 3 years old and has an MOT no way of checking.

I suppose they could ask for service receipts but unlikely.

I bought mine new in March and have done over 5500 miles already I have 12000 with NFU it is around £17 to add another 5k if needed

7346 for me so far since renewal on 1st of January. Will probably double that by the time we end the year in Spain. So l have unlimited with Safeguard.

Quite. Since you paid for 6000 they 'should' carry over the unused 1500 to next year.

( :) One can but dream........)
