Im currently storing 5 litres of petrol in a can well actually a plastic petrol can for the generator

But where do you put it

In the garage

Outside

Who does what

I used to store a five ltr plastic petrol can under the lounge seating.
While travelling the generator lived on the floor in the U shaped lounge.
Contrary to what others say I never noticed a smell of petrol.
You should only smell it if its in a poorly sealed container or fuel tank.

I carry a small amount in the garage for my eBike gennie recharging set-up...
I ensure its sealed and not having any splashes on it when stowed away...the container has a max of 5 litre..but 2or3 litres is all I need...
My memory goes back to the early 70's when I attended a serious incident involving the loss if two young lives...a car fire caused by a leaking petrol can stored in the boot, that was ignited by a faulty brake light connection....

I'm lucky, Kentucky Estro9 has a generator locker underslung on RH side made of galv steel & ventilated, enough room for 20 litres of petrol & 10 litres of oil, cans of brake cleaner & anything else flammable. Was scared by my French ins. co who, when I explained there was a full size m/cycle in the garage he told me that it would safer for the fire brigade if I drained it of petrol as they would not be prepared for it in an accident, plus its a 20 yr old Italian tart that always has a wiff of petrol and I sleep above it.

I got a kit and converted my Honda Eu whateveritis 'suitcase' to run off gas as well as petrol. I plug it into BBQ point. Subjectively it's quieter running on gas. Bulkier tho' as all the gas gubbins bolts on the outside of the casing. Unfortunately it's not easy to switch from petrol to gas as I have to get all the petrol out of the carb float chamber before it will start on gas. Gas to petrol is simple, just put some petrol in.
Better than carrying petrol, IMHO

We use a metal petrol cannister now rather than the plastic one because the seal is so much better. Stored in the garage.
The smell from the plastic one when the lid wasnt put on quite properly enough was overpowering.
It was user error, but a repeat is much less likely with the metal one.

We purposely bought a Honda EU10i with LPG conversion so didn't have to carry petrol onboard and it has never been run on petrol.

In the 10 or so years we've had the gen have only used it a couple of occasions but not for a long time so now it lives at home & we don't carry it.

If anyone is interested, I shall be listing it for sale in the classifieds in a couple of weeks.

We use leisure batteries with solar panels. Sorry it doesn’t answer your question however I would never store a container of petrol in the habitation area of the vehicle.

Who does what
on my last van ..a self build, I made up a lockable cradle for a metal 5l can and carried it on the outside with the genny.. on the rear door above the bike and generator in the attached photo.
in all the years I owned it there was only a problem once on a ferry where it was picked up on and they tried to tell me I couldn't carry it..

I though the law is, or was, that flammable liquiids like petrol had to be carried in special metal containers with screw lids.

Some insurers will not give cover if petrol is carried, other than in propulsion fuel tanks. Check.

Geoff

Luckily on my Hymer starline it has an external locker that I keel all the hoses and 2 plastic cans one for van fuel and one for generator.

Im going for storing it in the gas locker seems best

It will run on lpg too so Ill get a longer pipe so I can do that option to

Cheers

Which doesn't explain why just about every supermarket has 5ltr plastic containers in their for court shop.
You can have 5ltrs in a proper plastic can or 10ltrs in a metal can as posted on the for court pillars.
I often get 2 x 5ltr petrol in plastic for the garden equipment

I once found a 20 litre petrol jerry can burnt and blackened blown up like a rugby ball under a static caravan we had just finished extinguishing !!! No one mentioned it being there .

Quite often the case....if you don't ask they don't tell...
