How a simple cambelt replacement led to an engine disaster some 10 months later.

Just a note on the use of « Geuine Manufacture’s Parts. Just had 3 clutches fitted to my 3litre 2011 IVECO Daily, The first clutch was slipping due to leak from the rear main seal. No Problem , repairing garage insisted on supplying parts. Seal and full clutch fitted. Day one oil pouring from the Bell Housing! Back to Garage. Genuine IVECO seal fitted no leak. Week 3 Clutch starts slipping. Back again. Genuine IVECO Clutch fitted , off we go again. Week 3 again it starts slipping. Now they are starting to loose interest, unfortunately I wasn’t ! Out it came again looks like the Centre plate on the gearbox side has been contaminated, possibly from overlubrication of the release bearing. Now , the Genuine IVECO Clutch is also made by LUK. SO ALL three clutches are manufactured by LUK. IVECO buy them and box them up and charge 1£k for the full kit. Moral of the story check who has stamped the parts! Before parting with your money . The conclusion of this tale is that I believe the Garage have greased the shaft when LUK Specifically say do not grease plastic bearing carriers. The owner of the garage whom I have known for years was adamant that they should be greased. I have just emailed him guidance notes for these bearing from LUK. !
I paid £400.00 less for the current full clutch than IVECO Charged for the same item!
I wait to see if it will start slipping again.

Lots of BMWs suffer cam chain issues. N47 is renowned for it. Chains stretch, tensioners fail, guides wear. And then the cost is much higher than a new belt. Some chained engines are well engineered, but others, not so much. It's not a universal silver bullet.
I'd always prefer a camchain. Never had a problem with them. Had a couple of cambelts fail on cars though.

I always thought they gave at least 12 months warranty no matter which cam belt used.
Camper uk gave a fixed price saying it takes 6 hours 👍 We watched the mechanic take the van keys from us at 9am -van moved around the back at 10 then went on the lift at 10.20 and front wheel removed - mechanic went for dinner around 12.30 returning at 1.30 - Returned van to us just after 2. He also changed water pump. Also two auxiliary belts for additional £30
Edit 2years warranty with Camper uk 👍

If kit Is supplied and fitted then you would have a guarantee, but you supply parts, garage can blame belt, belt supplier can blame fitter, could be a long fight.
A very short 6 hours work then, bet the fixed price was based on 6 not 21/2 hrs !

Forgot to say van is an A class

Cambelt / timing belts are a right royal PITA.

I have just had the belt changed our old fiat ducato (Iveco engine). 2nd time in 8 years, changed on age rather than mileage. £225

Our other three motorhomes all had timing chains, as do most of my cars.

But I have an Audi in Spain. That, like our previous Audi, was due a belt and pump change last year. That was a real pain to get Someone to change. Eventually, I found a local garage (Polish) to do the work , €555.

Then I received an email from feu vert in Benidorm, €450.

I keep looking at replacement motorhomes. Trying to find anything with a true torque converter automatic with a chain driven engine and left hand drive !. Difficult
