I need to get a new hose. I only used mine once last year, and it split first time, but we’ll do more sites this year. What kind do people use, and what length is a good compromise between it being useful, but still easily portable and not much faff?

I use the expanding hose, from any good diy or garden centre... easy to handle and small and easy to store..👍🏼
I use one of those too, I’m often amazed at how far it reaches when fully expanded (insert your own smutty joke here).

Bought a reel of flat hose and then chopped it one third to two thirds. I keep the 2/3 easy accessible and the 1/3 at the back of the locker in case I get "caught short". Of hose that is! The cassette was a waste of space as the hose folds flat and with a short elastic tie doesn't unravel.

We've got a 6m one but hardly use it. I just have a few trips to the tap every week with a slimline watering can and a 5L water bottle. It's good exercise 😇

We use a Hozelock Picohose, as the cassette is nice and compact.

Garden hose for when travelling from place to place and can get close to a tap. Two 10l jerry cans with spouts when we're stationary.

I do keep meaning to split the hose in two: 1/3 and 2/3 as the shorter length would be easier to manage when next to the tap.

We’ve tried all sorts but have a fairly short expanding hose that works very well. As long as you make sure to empty it after you’ve disconnected it, it stores very easily in the door pocket. We also have a collapsible 20 litre container with a bit of pipe for when we don’t move the van (but I find that a bit heavy to pour in).

Roll flat type on a reel, about 10m long, but you have to take it completely off the reel to be able to use it. But as I only have 60l tanks, most of the time I fill from a Collapz watering can and bucket, only takes 4 trips if completely empty, and the faff to drive to the water point, unroll the hose, fill and try and put it all away makes the watering can bucket seem easier.

Thanks all, I’ve bought another expanding hose, because they’re do much easier to manage. It was an expanding one that split, and I didn’t know if they were generally carp or if I was unlucky.

I think the replies show again how we all differ. I think the longest we have ever parked in one place is 3 days so with a 130litre fresh tank a watering can would be a waste of space if I'm driving anyway stop at the tap!.

I’d agree, until my frost valve went in Paris and dumped all my water, at a site with no hose, the two days into a five day stay to visit Disney, the day after my hose split. Was glad I had them then!

There will probably be a day that I wish I had one but never in 8 years so far if we carried everything we needed once in every 10 years or so we would never move!

I know. I thought they would be an awful faff, and only took them for emergencies. I didn’t buy an expensive Motorhome with on board water carry to drag it about in cans!! but actually it wasn’t so bad, and I’d do it more often, now. (Assuming I remember to go and reclaim them off the allotment that is!)

I use a lay flat type on a reel. Cost about £30.
Problem with that is it a faff to have to unroll it all off the roll before using it, even if you are only 6ft away from the tap, and then have to get all the water out of it after use and roll it back onto the roll.

That is the type I would recommend for being the most faff free. I have 2 of them (1 x 30m & 1 x 15m) and can join them together. They push out all the water when you turn the tap off.

Brunner Triple core flat hose in food grade plastic that works coiled on the reel available from e bay. Great
..just remember that there will be water in the hose when you pack it away

Expandable. 2 different lengths, only had to join them once.
A bag of different tap fittings is also a good plan.

Newbie question here..

Do you make any particular effort to keep the hoses and watering cans clean like the tanks?

and do you then drink water straight from the tap, or boil it first?

I use food grade citric acid powder to clean and disinfect the water system in motorhome once a year. I fill the water tank up with the solution of citric acid and water and switch on taps until water starts coming out, making sure that it is coming out of hot and cold. Then let it all stand for 2 hours. Then open taps and let the solution drain into my grey tank until that is full, and leave that standing for a couple of hours. Drain everything down and rinse twice with fresh water, until you cannot taste or smell any citric acid. I also let the citric acid solution stand in hoses and watering can for a while then drain and rinse.

We do drink the water from our tank but we have a 3M microbiological filter on the tap we draw our drinking and cooking water from.

When filling with a hoses or hoses I always run some water through the hose(s) and onto the ground to wash out any stale water that had been standing in the hose before filling

We try to keep the hose clean and let it dry off between uses...but its not always possible so we keep it in a plastic box. We use the tank water for cooking, in the kettle and for cleaning teeth but for drinking water we have a separate 2L jug kept in the fridge which we tend to fill directly from a mains tap on site (we also have a separate 5L water carrier if we're going to be off site for a few days). I'm sure the tank water is perfectly safe to drink, I just prefer my drinking water to be fresher.

Our watering can must be 5 years old and it's never needed cleaning because when I clean the tanks I mix the VWP up in it. For the hose I just flush it through first. We don't drink the tank water just use it for washing up, boiling food in and tooth brushing 👍
