Personally I would avoid the flat hoses on cassette reels - more hassle than convenience. Good length of food grade hose from your local chandlery should do the job. That said, whilst I carry a 20mtr hose, I rarely use it as we also have a 20ltr water carrier that we use to top up the tank. If payload became crucial, the hose would be amongst the first things to go . .

Just so I’ve a hose for garden and one for adding fresh water, I’ve bought a food grade flat pack hose to add water to the Motorhome (y)

Edit: hose is for home drive use. A flat pack 20lt bucket is my weapon of choice on a pitch 🤪

I tried a flat hose and couldn't get on with it. I started with a longer length and found it a faff to have to unwind it all to use it, even if you're right up against the tap. I cut it shorter and realised the reel is taking up as much space as a length of normal hose. But less convenient. I've gone back to using a 5m length of normal hose with various quick connectors in a hose bag for the past few years.

Same here for the most part, .................. but a 20lt bucket, I bow to your manly shoulder strength, 10lt for me, but one on each arm for balance. :giggle:

We copied what Two on Tour do or they copied what we do when on tour! Whatever, clearly both pairs think the same way.

On a day out from home, we'll use our outdoor tap to fill 5l or 10l containers to put up to 20l in the fresh water tank.

Food grade hose, not flat pack, for most times. Biggest issue is it is cumbersome and doesn’t wind up easily. Previous van had a flat pack hose, attached to the whale filler (It was an Autosleeper). Didn’t like that. you had to unroll the lot and it was difficult to roll in. Half way through and the roll would come apart! We also have an expandable hose to attach to the food grade one, for when we need a longer reach, for example when filling up at home. Although not food grade it is kept solely for the van and not used very often (not sure whether low use makes it more or less hazardous)

Expandable, Flat or Garden?
What are the pros & cons please?
TIA
Any type of garden hose that coils up small.
Shortish as you tend to park the van next to the tap.
A selection of adapters for all the various taps you will come across

I’ve tried them all. Expandable - shite. Flat on a reel - shite. Blue food grade- went black inside.
Now use a watering can, always the right length to reach from the tap to the van - me. Never need to move van - me. Able to keep clean - me. 👍

Have a small length of offcut garden hose and a couple of the flat solid hoses that you don’t have to unreel the lot to fill..
Had them a couple of years and they are fine.

Made the mistake of a 20 litre can , couldn’t lift it up to the fill point on the van without spilling most of it😲. A 10 litre plastic petrol can with the flexi spout does the job (note it’s never had petrol in it ) 😉 if not close enough for the hose to reach.

Gonna get one of them , like the fact you don’t need to reel out the full hose to use it.

I like the look of that. Clever design. Does it accept standard hozelock or equivalent fittings?

I rather think that most people will struggle to get 100lts of water from a French service point into their van with a 10lt bucket or watering can in the 4 or 5 minutes of time that most give you.
Another reason we don’t do France. Hate the place.

How does it not need to be unwound? It must expand when used?
It’s a fairly flat solid hose that has 3 holes running through it, obviously does not fill as fast as a normal hose but it is a good way of filling without unreeling a full hose.
Looked at expanding hose but didn’t like the look of them.

Yes standard fittings.
I have a small length of garden hose to connect onto the end near the tap saves having to unreel that bit.
How big is the hose diameter?- Its looks small- does it restrict the flow from the tap?
