OK so No1 daughter has kindly offered to recycle our 14yr old TV (50" Sharp LCD) which i guess has some more life left in it yet. So we are on the hunt for our next TV for our living room.

Technology: LCD (LED) or OLED or even QLED ? read plenty of reviews, watched plenty of spotty teenagers reviews on YT....
Size: decided to go a bit bigger, 65" or so as the room is large and we view the TV from approx 4m away
Brand: not bothered
Other: i do like the Phillips Ambilight feature but wonder if it's just a gimmick ?

Our living room is fairly dark (old house, small windows) and we only use the TV in the evenings. Also we already have a Sony sound bar that we will reuse.

What's peoples views based on real experience ?

Current favourite is a Phillips 65" OLED with Ambilight but still waiting for the sales end of this month before committing.

Philips haven't made TVs for a few years now, the licence to use the logo was bought by another company. Will probably come up on Google if you're bothered 😊👍

All OLED panels are currently made by LG - the brands (Sony, Phillips, etc.) add their own electronics to the panel…….

Samsung are producing a refined LED technology, mini or micro LED which is (possibly) as good as or better than OLED……

There’s always something better ‘just around the corner’…….. ;)

Don't really mind if it's Stevens or Johns, although i suspect it's more likely Chengs that make them now... same old, same old.

Have you looked at the new Samsung Neo QLED, I think our next one will be the QN90A 65

Worth keeping an eye on the Samsung site, they have regular 5 year warranty and decent cash back deals.

I would guess the Phillips OLED panel was manufactured by LG?

We bought an LG 55 OLED back in late 2017 to replace a Samsung curved tv (gimmick) - it has a great picture. No idea about current offerings though.

Our 43" LG TV has been great, bought in 2012 it's as good as new now 👍

No need to wait for the Sales! Check out Costco good choice and prices and special offers are unbelievable including Oleds.

Our LG has had more new screens under warranty than I could shake a stick at.
Old faithful SONY LED in the bedroom is still going strong, so we've just bought another SONY LED & I can't fault it so far.

How about the new “Sky Glass”. I will get one when this one dies unless I die first 😂😂

The trouble I found with sound systems was that their technical performance output was out performing my ability to hear it. I am now finding the same with TV's. I have a New Samsung Neo QLED and quite honestly can't discern that much improvement over its predecessor.
I feel that technology marketing is overtaking need in certain areas.
I have an internet speed of 60 Mbps in the sticks of Somerset which is plenty fast enough for me and my techno neighbour who is a high demand user with 4 gaming kids. Yet we are constantly fed the line that we can have better. So yes have vs need is the issue!

We have a Samsung TV and Samsung soundbar and woofer. To solve the problem of hubby’s hearing, I bought one of these. I output the tv sound to it, then take the output of this device to both the soundbar and to bluetooth headphones for my husband.
Amazon product ASIN B07BQYYDNJ

What's your budget , I have a lg Oled , had it for 2 years now , some of the HDR 4K & 8k demos on YouTube still impress me though there's quite a difference between Netflix streamed 4k and 4KBlu-ray picture quality

I'd look at LG over any of the others

That Sky Glass range does look interesting.
When I worked in Sky's Broadcast Support team, the TV engineers that worked on the studios' and edit suites' graded monitors used to recommended a couple of Samsung models.
5 years on, I wonder if they now recommended their employer's product

I have a Toshiba that has a great screen. Only HD though - I need to create some sort of accident and get current :o

Costco good on price as has been mentioned. I would buy last year's WhatHiFi award winner in the size you want; if was that good last year, it's still good this year just not new.

Sound wise, always a separate amp and speakers or a decent soundbar.

Same here, we've had various LG products and they are all good and last ages although for those who like to have an 'excuse' to change for a newer model that might not be a good thing! :giggle:

One thing to watch out for with LED/QLED/OLED :giggle: or whatever else they are called is that the backlights can be prone to failing on some so make sure you check out the reviews for the make/type you are thinking of going for.

65 inches, wow! that's big in a normal sized lounge, in our lounge it sure would be the Elephant in the room.:giggle:
1st movie to watch has gotta be George Orwell's 1984, we are all watching you! long before Amazon was listening to you!o_O
Have fun we are still waiting for our 43" Panasonic Plasma to give up on us, being a scot we polish it and let it rest all day between night viewings.(y)

Personally, I’d be leaving a first generation Sky Glass tv well alone. The next question I’d be asking myself is do I want to be wed to the Sky platform like that? But horses for courses I suppose.

I would look on the best buy review sites, they do this for a living.

Another vote for LG OLED. I could personally tell the difference when I visited the stores. At times the picture on my ‘E’ version is stunning.
They’re always recommended by Which (as are Samsung).

I normally go for Panasonic, they always feature quite high in the professional reviews, plus they match the cinema surround system we have.

That would be down to the bandwidth required to stream 4K, whereas there are no (real) constraints for 4KBlu-Ray, just the version of HDMI that is implemented on the television……
