Hi there I have a Fiat Ducato Ci Motorhome 54 plate

Last week it lost power the speedo stopped working but no warning light came on no smoke the engine still drove perfect just took ages our garage has tried everything but is now at a stop as to what it could be as it’s not coming up on the computer either when plugged in
We only bought it in March and are gutted has anyone else had this problem or would be able to give advise he has said about finding a auto electrician if anyone can help as well thanks

Do you mean electrical power or mechanical power?
You say the engine ran perfectly but took ages which points to limp mode.... The engine went into safe mode (greatly reduced power) to prevent further damage.
It sounds like your garage doesn't have the correct diagnostic tools and you need a Fiat Profession Garage to scan the onboard computer properly.
An auto electrician is clutching at straws and won't fix it.

Would it go into limp if the Speedo stopped working because of safety? Just clutching at a straw.

The speedo sounds coincidental or just associated with a major fault.
I suppose without a speedo input (faulty speed sensor) to the ECU none of the speed related items would work... ABS, TC etc... so may be the problem.

Took ages I mean to get home

They have tried another speedo but still not working nothing is showing up on the diagnostic test when the speedo was working the van was fine it was only when the speedo stopped working that we lost power at some points the speedo would be all over the place even saying we was doing 100mph which our van def can’t do lol it would go 40,20,60,100 then it would sort itself out an we would have power again but now it has completely stopped

With that bit more info...electronic Speedo sensor on the gearbox is failing/has failed.
10 minute job to replace.
It isn't the speedo clock.... That stopped working because it didn't get an electronic signal from the sensor .

Gearbox has been tested an all is working perfect ?‍♀️?‍♀️?‍♀️

Mind you he did say about gearbox so not sure if he def checked it as it would mean taking it all out is it quite a big job??

It is the sensor on the gearbox Not a fault with the gearbox & swopping it shouldn't take very long.

The sensor screws into the side of the gearbox. It needs specialist equipment to test it which is why I suggested a Fiat Professional dealer garage.
If it has failed it won't send a signal and the brakes safety features such as anti lock braking will rely on that signal among others to work. If the signal isn't there the system can't work so the computer shuts everything down to limp home mode as a safety feature

Thank you will give garage a ring in morn as speak to them about checking the gear box

Agree with pappajohn above, problems like this are best looked at by a Fiat Professional dealer because they are receiving updates from Fiat regarding problems and have the correct equipment. For them it maybe just a quick fix.

You can't respond any more without subscribing but it's the senson on the gearbox, not the gearbox itself
It may be worthwhile taking a risk and changing it anyway as just getting the fault diagnosed at a Fiat Pro garage will cost more than the sensor and if Fiat replace it you'll need a bank loan to pay for it. .

It sounds like your garage doesn't have a clue what it's doing to be quite honest.
If it is in limp mode, it will have a code.
If the gearbox sensor isn't working, it's not rocket science to test it (again with the right equipment like an oscilloscope.
I would cut your losses before they start butchering the vehicle and making more problems.
They very much sound like parts swappers. This is categorically not how you diagnose a fault..
ESPECIALLY if they start charging you for parts that didn't fix it...

Also garages don't take it too well if you try to tell them how to do the job you paid them to do.. :D

and yea, It looks like your free amount of posts maybe up, if you want to join, it is worth it. :)

we had speedo problem on 54 plate ducato fuse went due to a sensor [somthing like cold air sensor} took ages to find problem found answer on here undo sensor new fuse all good

How does a garage take ages to find a problem though... Speedo not working..
Hmm, start at speed sensor.. Hmm no output, Does it have power and zero volts (if it's not a self generating signal type) Oh look, no power, where does that come from..
Refer to wiring diagram.. Ahh it's tied in to this this and this... Do any of those have power.. Nope..
Ok is power OK at ecu /relay.. Yep, OK recheck wiring diagram follow cable route between known good points looking for plugs sockets / joins to test at.... Via fusible link "A"... ahh lets check that first... Oh look.... :D Now why did it blow.............. :D
So in answer, it takes ages because either the garage doesn't have the right tools and has to resort to guessing, or the garage simply hasn't a clue and throws parts at it til it does work. :D
