I have C1E on my licence (passed test in 1987) but next to it has a restriction of code 107 not exceeding 8250kg.

Description
You can drive vehicles weighing between 3,500 and 7,500kg (with a trailer over 750kg), with no more than 8 passengers and a driver. The combined weight of both can’t exceed 12,000kg

Restriction codes
107 Not more than 8250kg

I also have D1E as follows

Description
You can drive vehicles with no more than 16 passenger seats and a driver and with a maximum length not exceeding 8 metres with a trailer over 750 kg, provided that the Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) of the combination formed does not exceed 12,000kg

Restriction codes
101 Not for hire or reward
119 Weight limit does not apply

So before i try and clarify with DVLA (probably take me upto licence expiry date to get through) With the C1E can i drive a 7500kg vehicle with a trailer not exceeding 8250kg or i am i miss understanding? I ask as the D1E has not weight limit.

Appreciate all advice.
Thanks Iain

The 107 code on the C1E restricts the combined MAM to 8250k.
If the vehicle has a MAM of 4000 then a trailer of up to 4250k can be towed if that is within the legal capacity of the towing vehicle.
If the vehicle has a MAM of 7500k then the trailer is limited to 750k.
These are licence limits but the train weight of the towing vehicle must still be complied with.
I have no knowledge of the restrictions on D1E

OP

I thought at first you meant that you had passed the C1E test in 1987, noew realise it was the normal driving test for B (cars)

Matamoros has clarified the 8250kg train weight restriction that all of us who acquired C1 and C1+E have through 'Grandfather rights' having passed a B test before 1997.

Those who have passe a C1 test can drive with a train weight of 12 tons.

Category C1
You can drive vehicles between 3,500 and 7,500kg MAM (with a trailer up to 750kg).

Category C1E
You can drive C1 category vehicles with a trailer over 750kg.

The combined MAM of both cannot exceed 12,000kg.

Category D1
You can drive vehicles with:
  • no more than 16 passenger seats
  • a maximum length of 8 metres
  • a trailer up to 750kg
Category D1E
You can drive D1 category vehicles with a trailer over 750kg MAM.

The combined MAM of both cannot exceed 12,000kg.

Restrictions (Codes) are simple. You have the full entitlement stated but they have been restricted (downgraded if you like) i.a.w. the codes; e.g. D1 and D1E are minibus entitlements. Code 101 restricts you to driving on an unpaid basis, i.e. not commercially.

Omit the sectioned highlighted in red.
That only applies to test past after 2013.
Pre 1997 C1E stands at a combined weight of 8250kg

I was quoting the codes without any restriction having been added which would only show on a person's licence / entitlement. Doing so is how they are supposed to be read and should avoid confusion.

Thanks all.
So is it normal to have the reduced towing ability on the C1E, under the grandfather rights? Does anyone have a C1E without the restriction without doing another test?

The restrictions on weights are derived from the difference between inheriting an entitlement and passing a test. Pre 1997 test acquired a 'free' trailer category. This is no longer the case. Hence any inherited C1E would have been on the back of a car pass entitling 7500kg MAM plus the 'free' trailer. All new C1 tests are separate from C1E as there is no longer any acquired trailer entitlements, all are gained by test.
In summary if you passed a C1 and then C1E test you can drive upto 12000kgs MAM, if you inherited C1E you are limited to 8250kgs.
For new licence categories trailers less than 750kgs are ignored hence a C1 will allow towing with a 750kg trailer without the need for the 'E' bit.
The relevant dates are from Jan 1997 and Jan 2013 when the rules were changed.
