From the start, I'm not expecting a raft of responses to this but I thought I would give it a go.

We have a 61 Plate VW Passat and, last week on a trip up north and going to an area unknown to us, we switched on the Sat Nav.
No matter what we did, the Sat Nav insisted that we were still in Cornwall even though we had travelled up to Bristol by this point.
It wouldn't show the road we were on and eventually showed it's place as being in the middle of the Bristol Channel.

Has anyone had dealings with a VW built in Sat Nav? Are they able to be reset? Does uploading a new set of maps via the SD Card reset the whole system?.

ANY (and I mean ANY) assistance gratefully received.

Has anyone out there had a problem with their Sat Nav and found a Company who could assist? We know we could go to an auto electrician if we had a 12v problem, but where should we be looking for a repairer to this essential piece of kit.

Regards

I occasionally have a problem with the sat nav on my Golf (2017) searching for its location, I get it to reset by removing the SD card, giving the contacts a wipe with tissue and reinserting the card with a firm push, this usually does a reset.

Interesting.
I have a space to fit an SD Card but I don't think there's one there.

So where is your Satnav Cd card located?

Have you tried setup>factorysettings>select all>reset

The SD card slot is there. There isn't a card in it. The system is that you put an SD Card into it and after it has downloaded onto the hardware, the card is then redundant.

Got to 'Factory Settings' but there was no 'Select All' I did it anyway. No response.

How long did you wait to see if a signal and location was picked up. If it was switched off from Bristol area it may be "confused " and looking for sats.Switch on and leave it for maybe ten mins.
When my wife is driving and I close my eyes for two mins I don't know where I am:D. Old age doesn't come alone.

HI once again,
I have an answer. It's not the one I was hoping for and it will either cost about £30-40 to fix or it won't get fixed.
I have been out to the car and tried to put in a Postcode. It started to try to 'find' the postcode but the sliding bar didn't get far before it stopped and I didn't get the 'Posh Totty' that normally speaks to me from it was silent. It eventually posted 'Computer said NO!'
I then tried putting an address in with exactly the same result.
I then asked it to find a Petrol Station. The Sat Nav said it didn't know any.
Same with a known POI.
Same with a Car Park.

In other words the Sat Nav has nothing in it's Memory.

I deduce that when I did a Factory Reset, the Sat Nav did exactly that. It took out all in it's memory as if it had just been fitted at Wolfsburg? (and prior to the SD Card being fitted)

I'm hoping that, if I buy an SD Card and install it, the Sat Nav will operate properly. If it doesn't then I'll have wasted £30-40. but I don't think I'll be spending whatever a new Radio/Sat Nav costs.

Thanks to all the Funsters with their suggestions.

I find the VW sat nav rubbish, thought my Range Rover one was bad (as were the other 3) but it beats that.
Luckily my new pick up has the Apple Play so I use that with my i phone.

Have had 3 Audi A6s and they have had the best sat nav system I have seen, funny VW don’t seem to use the same?

According to the site Navigation don't 'Do' VW and when I ws directed to VW's own site they only 'Do' from 2014 and ours is 2011.

But we have a Passat Est. If you try clicking that, it states 'From 2014' Ours is a 2011. Are you saying that the Golf GTD is the same or are you suggesting, winging it and hoping it's the same?

Just a thought. Have you checked that you have the right country inputted? Our golf had to be re set to Wales each time we went over the bridge and back to England when we returned.

And the Germans have a reputation for efficiency?!!

Would assume and you can check by looking at the different links if the download file is the same for the different models and the radio fitted.

worst case scenario is you have to go to VW and buy one, live dangerously, if cautious do a back-up first.

Update on this one.

Took the car to Heathrow for a three week holiday, (the car and us)
Sat it in the Long stay and we jetted off.

Tried it when we got back to the car and, no, it still wasn't playing,
BUT.
Last Friday, I went back to it and Hey Presto, (other Supermarkets are available) it's up and running.
You couldn't make it up.
