As some of you are aware, we have recently been inflicted with an old Hymer!

It is a 1986 brownie on a fiat 2.5 non turbo base.
We have been working on the interior for the last year or so, and now it's time to get the mechanical side of things done.
It is in need of steering rack, cv joint/bearings, driveshaft and clutch.
The garage we tried have an outside lift for access for larger vehicles, but don't have the right kind of lift to sort these jobs and aren't sure about the availability of spares.... (I know about Coastal motorhomes)

They are making enquiries at local places but have no one that wants to 'take this on'!
We are in Stirling, and the van is driving horribly at the moment, does anyone know of any 'old school' mechanics in Southern Scotland or Northern England that would be happy to do these jobs?

It may involve refurbishment rather than replacement of parts, and even some manufacturing of bits?

Many thanks in anticipation 🤞🏻

Darren and Lynne 😎

All these parts are available here via Oscaro.es or Autodoc which is EU wide and available uk or EU.
cv boots are available from a Birmingham company online on eBay and I think do cv joints as well.

i've just checked & this is who I used for cv Boots & joints when it was easy to ship from/to the UK.

all driveshafts are available on Oscaro so shouldn't be any different on Autodoc.

They come complete with both inner & outer cv joints . No idea if you would have the handed different length ones where the UK offside( lhd passenger side) has an additional support bearing?

You have to take in to account that these outer cv joints are industrial scale & if undamged , i.e. boot hasn't been split for 5 years & let in grit, they can be dismantled cleaned ,reassembled with new grease , new rubber & are good for another 50 years.

lots of choice with clutches.https://www.oscaro.es/kit-de-embrag...79-28024-14q-2-5-d-furgon-75cv-479-2557-0-gt#

Pity it isn't a 1900 diesel I've a complete Valeo clutch for one .
If you can find someone they should be able to obtain all the parts via Autodoc.
I used to do it if in the Uk & just swop addresses on my account from here to there.
Pity you couldn't get it done here when you were over ?

I believe it’s a mechanic you are after as opposed to parts.
go on to Talbot owners Club and register, say hello and ask there.
plenty of help and somebody will know a mechanic in your part of the world.
mechanics are scarce these days but lots of fitters who can look at a computer screens!
lovely van by the way

I'd look for a small independent hgv / psv garage they will have the right sort of lifts and jacks to deal with heavier vans and are used to working on older vehicles

I will have a look in the morning when I'm in the office for the number of a lad I used in perth and I will pm you his details if I can find them although he might have packed up because it was about 6 years ago

Thanks for the info.
The original plan was to trot over to Spain in it and get a lot sorted. We have a mechanic friend next door but one and I know parts are more available than the UK.

Unfortunately the driving is too much of a judder now and from 35 - 55 mph it is a job to hang on to the wheel(driveshaft), also the cv bearing is making such a racket round any r/h corner even at a crawl that I don't want to risk something collapsing or worse. The steering rack needs doing for this next MOT and might as well get the clutch done while it's in bits.....
The rear leaf springs are not quite horizontal yet so they will do 'til we get over and a couple of other bits.

Now we have had the van for a bit, have done most of the interior and are really happy with the layout, we are happy to blow a bit getting it running as it should, and enjoy a good few years motoring.
