any suggestions on a decent replacement may be with sat nav?

Billy

Get one with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. Don’t bother with internal sat nav the phone apps are kept up to date without charge and have better traffic info. I use CarPlay with Google Maps or Waze and think it is the bees knees compared to other navigators I have tried. You also get seamless hands free integration of the other phone functions such as calls, messages, music and voice commands.

I have a pioneer unit with the FS160 truck sat nab connected to it which allows vehicle height & width etc to be inputted. It’s pretty good for a sat nab. Obviously the maps can go out of date quickly but only for the newer roads. Not sure what model you have but my pioneer unit supports Apple car play through the usb connection. Quite easy to get a cable out to near the drink holders on fiat cab.

Best of both worlds then if you’re not concerned with low bridges like the many in some parts of the uk.

100% this.

We have a Sony double DIN head unit with Android Auto and it is an absolute game changer. We've just spent 11 weeks touring around Europe - Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, down to the Bosnian border and back. Great to have Google Maps, Spotify and BBC Sounds all on a screen right in front of you in the dashboard. Option to have them full screen or split screen.

Reverse camera plumbed into it too, so everything in on place. Nice and neat. No cables and suction cup mounts littering up the windscreen.

Which model did you go for

Mines a couple of years old now, but this seems to be the current replacement.

The touchscreen (a bit unresponsiveness compared to modern smartphones) is my biggest gripe, but you soon get used to giving it a firm prod). Hopefully the latest model will have improved that.

A row of physical buttons also means that volume changes, next and previous track, etc. are easy to achieve without having to look at the screen. It also recognises voice commands so prodding the screen is mostly unnecessarily anyway. Just say - Navigate to Calais. Stream News Quiz on Radio 4. Play David Bowie Hunky Dory on Spotify. Phone Mum's mobile - and it just does it.

I've added a wireless dongle that makes it even better (and eliminates the occasional connection drop outs that the wired connection to my phone previously had). Just toured Europe for 11 weeks and only one instance where the connection was lost and the head unit needed to be restarted to reconnect.

Obviously you need a decent data allowance on your phone to get the best of it.

I had a brief look, it was so complicated that my brain hurt afterwards. I currently have a 12 year old Pioneer F930BT and i decided that it would be probably best to buy another pioneer and just fingers crossed that it would plug into existing leads... (Pioneer SPH-EVO62DAB is what i thought). But then came the question of mounts and i had a melt down and thought id just come back to it later.
