Painting some stuff in the garden, Using Hammerite, blimey, its like trying to paint treacle, can I add some thinners to it?

Hammerite have their own thinners. I don't know if others will do the same job.

You can use standard cellulose thinners, but the finish will have less gloss. There is gel in the Hammerite formulation. Do not use white spirit or similar unless you want a horrible mess.

Shove some petrol in it. 💅🏻💅🏻

I had some rusty wheels a few years ago, had them sand blasted and painted with smoothrite. Looked a million dollars, it’s good stuff covers a multitude of sins

On a sensible? Note use the Hammerite thinners or a fast flash thinner do not use white spirit. you need to get the consistency that it could be used in a spray gun , and then apply using a spray gun, brilliant result, if you brush it becomes like treacle

I have mixed thinners with it to spray a trailer, works ok and did a good job.

Last tin of Hammerite I had was like p!ss.
New formula it said on the tin.....would barely stick to metal, Into the bin and used regular enamel instead.

Talking of Hamerite reminds me of a mate of mine that bought an ex gas board mini van and decided to paint it Hamerite Blue. This went well until he left the brush on the roof over lunch time. It was a very warm day and of coarse the paint set. He cut the handle off and left the bristles on the roof. It was like that for as long as the van survived.
There were quite a few ex auction bought cars and vans painted with Hamerite during my time at the Army Appretice College.

An old day shift fitter I knew was painting the machines in the workshop one at a time with blue Hammerite. Cos it was like treacle, he made up a stirrer by bending up a welding rod, put it in the pillar drill and had it stirring away on a slow speed. When he came back from lunch, he switched the drill back on, but someone had put it into high speed, centrifugal force took over, bending the stirrer and sending the tin flying and the paint went everywhere. I think there would have been a sacking of they'd identified the culprit !

Yes I bet you used hamerite on old plant a lot to make it look respectable, we go for the shabby chic look. Haha

Ivory55, one of the places I worked at were fixated with Hammerite. Like you, I prefer that "well worn" look on machinery. Mind, the lads that did the painting weren't the sharpest tools, they used to paint on top of exposed threads, grease nipples, machined surfaces and even went over some old, black, "crackle finish" test equipment with bright green Hammerite !
As for thinning Hammerite, I get a couple of tins of this stuff when it's in Lidl, miles cheaper than the recommended stuff and a good general brush cleaner.

Cellulose thinners if you use anything
I've just painted my rusty sump pan with it, I was glad of the treacle consistancy.
Just got to wait and see how long it lasts

Hammerite. Is a Paint Over Rust paint, you just take a wire brush to remove the "loose" stuff, and paint it on straight from the tin!. I did an old "Gas Lamp" Post for the Garden 10 years ago, it`s only just looking as if It needs freshening up (y) On a cold day the Black stuff is like Tarmac. !
