How do people manage Google Drive storage ?
With your Google account you seem to get 15Gb of free storage then you get messages asking for payment to pay for more storage.
I've been getting these messages for a while so I looked at what I had stored on my Google Drive. There didn't seem to be that much on there but there were some photos that I deleted or moved to another removable drive.
After doing this it didn't seem to free up any space ?
So it looks like the only answer is to pay up, but it seems unclear what is actually taking up all this free space.
What do others do and how do you find Google storage ?
Is there an alternative I've missed

You're experience isn't mine, but I'm only at ~5GB of the free 15GB

Do you use the Google Drive app on a Desktop? What is the free space there?
On drive.google.com in a browser, what is the free space there?

While at the browser Google Drive, empty your Bin
Also in the browser Google Drive, click on Storage and look for larger files: -

(I've removed my Drive's filenames)
A tablet or Smartphone app has more utilities, iirc. So maybe there's some other help possible.

Sorry, For the extra utilities I was confusing Google Drive with Google Photos.
At the moment I've only the above start points.

Mine is up to 12GB keep getting messages about being nearly full but I know there are quite a lot of videos I can delete.

You cold just open another Google account with another email and move all the stuff you want to save on the cloud over to there freeing up the original drive so it carries on backing up as normal.

I'm sure I found films somewhere that I forgot were actually stored on Google drive. Moved them to disk to free up space.

There will be something you're missing using up all that space.

Never had a issue with it..
I think the "nearly full" messages are a prompt to try and sell you more storage.
When i get them i use the prompt as a time to look through and clear any unwanted stuff.

Ref Google photos i give that a clear now and then and also empty the bin.
Drive has a trash bin that also needs to be emptied..
