I would get your existing unit checked and repaired by someone like EcuTesting if it were mine. Cheaper than a main dealer and you'll get a known tested and working unit back, rather than taking a gamble with an unknown eBay unit that you will still need diagnostic equipment to program into your van.

I absolutely agree with you there. My next step is to get a second opinion by recommended experts to be absolutely sure that it is the ABS pump. I had a conversation with them yesterday and it seems that they have had a few cases where the initial diagnosis was incorrect. If it turns out to be the ABS pump then I will do exactly as you suggest. Thank you and everyone else for contributing to help solve my problem!

So I have decided to get a second opinion to be absolutely sure that it is the ABS pump before having it taken off for a referb. Friends have recommended a local expert who have had a lot of experience with these faults. I spoke to them yesterday and they really seem to know what they are talking about. They insist that they must do their own diagnostic tests to make absolutely sure that it is the ABS pump. If it is they will take the pump out for referb. I am also considering having the ECU re mapped. I will let let you know the outcome. Unfortunately they can't fit me in until the 30th January so I will have to rebook the ferry once again. I checked out these chaps on Trust Pilot and they have only 5 star reviews so here's hoping! Thanks everyone for helping to solve my problem, it's greatly appreciated.

Ferry booked for Sunday week, Dover to Calais for a 3 to 4 month trip through France, Spain and Portugal! Four new Michelin Agilis All Climate tyres fitted last Saturday in preparation for the M O.T.
On the way to Kwik Fit the ABS light and the Fuel Injection system light came on as well as the Speedo not working! I couldn't notice anything adverse whilst driving but it's not going to pass the M.O.T. with those lights on, so booked Bessacarr E520 in for a service and repairs. The van is only 7 years old so I'm hoping it's not too serious! Good thing is that I can get it fixed before I leave, hopefully before my ferry booking!

Hi KeefieWeefie, The abs light came on on my Mercedes Sprinter, after tests etc, it was the ABS Pump failed, Ouch, however, this may not be the problem in your case, it can be caused by dirty sensors on the calipers, also check that none of the wires from the sensors are chaffed or broken, either of these symptoms will cause your ABS light to come on and your speedo won't operate as it relies on the feedback from the sensors. Hope this helps you.

Thanks for the info. The electrician at Fiat Specialist Guest Van and Truck has checked all the sensors and wiring or so I was told. Going for a second opinion though.

Thanks friend. So did you replace the ABS with a new replacement? I have been pointed towards the many ABS pumps available on Ebay for a fraction of what Fiat want me to pay!

I paid for a new one. I also had a European tour planned, and knew if I had a problem with a new one I could have to sorted out on tour on its guarantee almost anywhere, whereas a refurb or replacement wouldn't have offered the same sort of insurance against failure.
I did read that the refurb company were highly recommended when I was doing my internet research, and I guess that hasn't changed.
Not sure I'd get one from ebay unless it was from that refurbishing company I guess?

Cheers

I know exactly how you felt! It is a worry when you have a big trip in the planning. I will wait to see what the 2nd opinion reveals before making the final decision. The thing with ABS is that you can still drive reasonably safely if it does fail because it's a fail safe system. I been driving around with the light on for weeks now without noticing any difference. Thing is I need to pass the MOT before I set off! One thing for sure is I wouldn't trust any car part sourced on Ebay!

Ah, there’s the difference! Mine went into severe limp mode and I could only drive at literally less than 5 mph! It was a proper back of a truck recovery job for my 4.5 tonner, to each garage I went to! Almost every warning light I had came on, including the engine light.
I have had the other limp mode, when an air mass indicator busted, and other than using more fuel, I could have driven it fairly normally. If I had had more time, I would probably have risked the refurbishment.

Ecutesting are offering a lifetime guarantee, that's more than Fiat or Bosch are giving, I'd be tempted to go with them ?

Id second that, the OE one has gone wrong, with no come back out of warranty, so what’s to stop a new OE one doing the same a few years down the line.

If proves to be the ABS pump after the 2nd opinion I will definitely go for a refurb! And a remap of the ECU for more torque and fuel economy. Cheers!

Hi, I have exactly the same problem was driving mine to a garage on saturday for a service and MOT before heading to Spain next week and the failure warning came up on display and speedo not working.
The garage attached to the Motorhome dealers are telling me its 1900 + vat for the part plus fitting.
Not sure if I will be able to get it all done in time may have to cancel the trip.
Anymore news on yours ?

Notice you live in Maidstone, have you tried Thomsett's, just off the A249? They might be able to help. They deal with loads of MHs and cars too. Certainly worth a call. They've been servicing & MOTing our MH since we started and are very good.

They have the capabilities to lift our 4.5 tonner on a lift.

They did a cam belt about 6 years ago, 9 months the tensioner bolts broke was lifted back there and he took the engine out and repaired it free of charge as he said he was the one who worked on it so accepted responsibility
he has a motorhome Himself

Hi, I feel for you! I've had to wait 10 days to get a 2nd opinion from a recommended garage. It's going in on Thursday. They tell me that they have on occasion found that the first diagnosis was wrong and turned out to be something simple however if it is the ABS pump they will get it refurbished at a fraction of the cost. I'll let you know the result! What model do you have?

So after waiting 10 days for the recommended garage it was there for two hours and they called to say that they couldn't do the job any cheaper than Guest Van and Truck in fact the place that refurbish ABS pumps for them said they wouldn't touch it and they wouldn't take it off to send to ECUTESTING. They couldn't get a new pump for under £2,300 plus VAT. What a waste of 10 days.
So now decided to bite the bullet and take it back to Guest. Phoned and asked them to book it in. They said that they would call and email a quote. Didn't get back to me so now taken it to a motorhome repair specialist in Dewsbury called Calder Valley Motorhomes. 7 to 10 days to wait again!
