I had a DBD32 1955 in 1967 when I was 16 not the most comfortable bike and the rrt2 g/box was a pain in town ! Made a lovely noise though and lovely smell (using the right oil ! )

Can ANYTHING beat the smell of Castrol R !!!!!
Funny you should say that as I went on a New Years Day trial on my bike and as I’m waiting to go through a section there was an old British bike in front running on R, smelt lovely could have followed him for ages

Run my bike on Strawberry 2t oil  not as nice.

What was the purpose of using Castrol R apart from the nice smell?Didnt it gum up the motor /
Well at the time it was about the best oil out there
A vegetable oil that was intended solely for racing... A lot of us used it just for the smell.. Not in the oil tank as it would have to changed every bloody week and it was REALLY expensive, but a cap full went in the tank when you filled up..In other words it was being used as an upper cylinder lubricant, nowt more

Its how Castrol got their name. Originally they were called Wakefield Oils but renamed when they started putting castor oil into their normal oils to decrease the cold viscosity. They took the "Castor" and "Oil" and banged them together to make Castrol. The "R" designated a racing formulation.
