Not seen a factory fitted Globecar pop top before but spotted these photos online & thought they might be of interest to anyone considering this:

It's a Poessl (Globecar) Summit 640 on the Citroen Heavy chassis. The pop top is around €5000 as an optional extra when placing new order.

SMC had a Familyscout L with one a few years ago, took them ages to shift it ... nice idea but you don't have a big heki so it makes it a bit dark inside, from memory I don't think it's a cheap option either.

Know it's not for everyone. Looks like there is still a Heki on the pop top roof so some light.
Checking price lists it's €3999 in white or €4999 if same colour as van.

Slight to minor!
I noticed that the Hymercar majored in pop-tops last year, I'm not convinced any of them sold either. I noticed it on the Globelcar options and thought it was nice of them to include it but would I suspect really suit a family with young kids.

The Hymercar guy I spoke to in October said they weighed about 100kg which is quite a bit of weight at the top of the van.

The Mazda Bongo Friendee pop-top has a skylight in the pop-top so you still get a roof window, open or closed.

In all honesty we would not have bought a Summit 640 in pop-top guise.

The thing about the Summit 600 and 640 is its distinct light and fresh interior and the addition of the pop-top would remove at least 2 of the 3 ceiling windows.

Also, I would not be able to fit fully in the shower as I use the skylight as a bit of extra headroom, without which, I would be hunched over.

As Karen has mentioned previously it would be a great expeditionary vehicle for a family of four as long as they were height deprived when it came to showering :D

My ideal van: A Summit 640 with 4x4 running gear

We initially thought we would get a T6 and convert it, but decided on a PVC for 2 reasons. Firstly, we wanted a separate toilet, especially when travelling with teenager. The second reason was the pop top ... I read lots of reports of them being blown about badly in stormy weather, water seeping through the wet fabric when touched on the inside, needing to dry off properly before packing up. Just seemed Scottish weather and pop tops were not the not ideal partners.

They’re fine, Fabsil the fabric. I had pop tops for a few years and endured some horrendous weather but they never leaked.

Just one thing to bear in mind is that 'officially' in Spain you can't camp on their parking areas, and putting up a raising roof is camping ...

I think they are a versatile option especially if you have a rear double too.
Just use in summer as an extra bed you can have separate spaces during the day too
Main thing is how they have been designed as long as there are no leaks when it's down
The thick mattress offers extra insulation too when down in winter.
Only problem is harder for solar fit unless you want flexible ones
No rooflight isn't an issue for me.

That's a good list of useful points Paul (y)We found that the Hymer Grand Canyon pop-top leaked when there was a bit of snow resting against the vertical mesh.

It seems that it is waterproof when nothing is pressing up against the tent mesh but if there is then expect a leak for sure.

Yes agree totally Andrew. For me only a good summer option, in fact I said to Tyne Valley why are you leaving the pop top up in this weather, it was extremely windy with a storm forecast on the night, they said it is left up CONSTANTLY so it can dry out.
Not my philosophy, although they do need to dry out after rain leaving it up all through winter, day and night is madness. It was rocking, shaking, the whole pop top mechanism arms/gas struts will eventually buckle slightly and be damaged due to constant wetness, the fabric will deteriorate. It will cause loads of problems for a future owner if they don't flog it soon.
Look at the weather we get around here in winter would you leave a tent out all winter?

Summer great option if you also have a rear double, winter, No unless it is calm, dry and mild.
My view is that it is just laziness to leave it up constantly but looking at the rest of the van I can understand, engine battery flat, van wouldnt start, habitation batteries flat, electric sliding door not working because no power. It shouldn't take a customer to discover this surely?
And on an 82 grand van as well, good grief.

@CazPaul

They still have that 4x4 Grand Canyon on their books Paul. It has been sitting in one place for over 17-months now - ridiculous eh!!

I'm not sure if you've noticed buy they don't seem to be receiving any new Hymer vans so I'm wondering if they've lost the non-PVC bit of the contract.

Not sure on that Andrew, the day before I viewed it they rang and said they have that day taken delivery of a brand new 2019 Grand Canyon on a Merc with the latest dash, which was indeed parked right next to the 4x4 model when I viewed.
Must say the latest Mercedes 2019 dash is much easier on the eye and I much prefer it.

You're right sir but it only appears to be an MLT and one GC PVC too date.

It's a bit spooky that we're already mid-March 2019 and there is a distinct absence of any MY19 A-class or C-Class vans from their yard.

The other Hymer dealers have them but not TVM?

Why did they put in a drop down sink that when not being used is lifted up against the window? Surely when menfolk are sat on the loo they want to be able to open the flipping window to save gassing themselves??? :notworthy:

The sink itself feels lovely quality, it's just the tip up bit I don't like

Yes and no, with our shower being in the 'corridor' it wouldn't make much difference but in the Globecar Campscout B where it has a more traditional washroom layout it would:

Because you don't like tip-up sinks or its location, or both?

I wouldn't call it a sink guys, it's more like a splash collector instead since you can't hold any bloody water in the thing - and it's a right swine to click up and down into a lockable position.

Andrew best me to it, the grand canyon sink although it feels lovely quality you can't hold any water in it.
I like everything fixed where possible in motorhomes, just don't like tip up sinks, slide away toilets etc, they are fine whilst new.
