Evening all

We are hoping (seriously ... we're desperate) to get away for some winter sun but are trying to sort stuff out before we go and one thing that we're thinking about is Romy (our elderly dog) who's rabies vac has to be done by 19th January 2020 or she'll have to start it all over again.

We don't really want to have it done now and 'upset' her system just in case it affects her so she can't go away so although we can come back before then and get her done at our own vet we're wondering just how easy it is to get her done abroad instead in Spain or France? I'm aware that the vac will only last for 1 year instead of 3 for those done in the UK but unless she's a miracle dog I can't see her going on for more than another year, if she does then so be it and we'll have to have her done again.

So, does anyone have any info on if this can be done easily and if so what the likely cost will be; also are the vets happy to put the vac details in an existing UK passport or do they insist on a new one from their country?

I had my Roxy anti rabies vac done in Mallorca ,September this year.
It has been recorded in my British pet passport.
My understanding is because of the British passport it’s good for 3 years costs about 70 Euro

If you think the dog might be "upset" by the vaccine would you prefer that to happen in the UK or overseas? I suggest get it done here ASAP, wait a few days and if no issues then travel.

Hi Mel, our Izzy had a UK passport, we then got her a Spanish one, and she had her Rabies injection in northern Portugal, I put it on John Jaws thread. ? ? €18 ? Bob.

I understand, only too well, your concern. Our dog is 14-years-old and becoming quite frail, although he still has a zest for life.

I can't answer your questions about getting it done abroad, but you may be unnecessarily concerned about upsetting Romy's system by getting it done early. I say this because I understand that the same vaccine is used in other countries which require boosters to be given at shorter intervals. As I understand it, the frequency of boosters is governed by the likelihood of coming into contact with rabies, within a given area. Thus, if you live in an area with proximity to an 'at risk' country, the boosters have to be administered more frequently.

Also, according to my highly clued-up vet, a fair proportion of dogs are failing the titre test because anti-bodies are too low as a result of the time-lapse since the last booster. This may not be of great concern if you're only visiting 'safe' countries, but if you're going to higher risk countries, this could mean that your dog is also at risk, because anti-bodies are low.
Maybe it would be a good idea to discuss it with your vet.

Enjoy your trip in your lovely, new van. I bet you can't wait. (y)

I had jades done in france just 3 days ago as hers had expired and I hadn't noticed hence why I'm still in France/belgium and not back home ?
cost €36 and no issue getting it done

Edit

5 days ago not 3 ....I slept 2 of them ?

We have our Charlie done every year in the Canaries as it falls due whilst we are over there.
€35 for Rabies and his yearly boosters no problems whatsoever with the vet signing his passport and also no problems when the passport is examined at the tunnel on our return.

For several years now I have arranged for Daisy’s annual vaccinations to be done in France at the same time as her passport check and Drontal tablet in September before returning to UK. The vet in La Mailleraye sur Seine then charges around 44€ all in. Much cheaper than my vet at home. This year however I asked for the usual 2 vaccinations which were duly done, but I queried why the bill was 20€ more than last year. The receptionist apologised and gave me a new bill. When I got back to the van I checked the passport and found the vet had given her the Rabies injection that I had not asked for.It was due in December. At first I was not happy but then realised it was probably a good idea to have an annual Rabies booster as one given almost 3 years ago would be at the end of it’s effectivenes. I did research to see if it was the correct one as required by the Pet Passport and it is.At the port of Dieppe they just said ” I see you have had the Rabies done a bit early” and that was fine.A12AB7DE-67C7-4300-84D8-76282E6D471D.jpeg

Before we set off travelling this year, we spoke to our vet Rosa in Javea about our dogs Rabies injection, saying when it was due, and we are only doing Spain and Portugal this year, Spain is one year, Portugal is three years, and she said she felt yearly was too much, getting it done in Portugal was a good idea, as it's the same injection and providing it's in the passport no problem. ? Bob.

It makes a change as he never checked jades passport properly and signed and stamped it good to travel only for me to get turned away at the eurotunnel as rabies had expired.

I for one wont use him again

Unless Mallorca allows a 3 year interval normally it may only be 'good' for one year - you need to check the date the vet has put in the passport for when it will expire to be sure.

Yup, that's the only vac you get in the UK now. There used to be some 1 year ones a few years ago which may have been 'old stock' ones with short expiry dates which they were having to use due to a shortage of ones with longer dates.

She's actually never been upset by them in the past but don't want to risk her not having a holiday (we thought last winter's would be her last!) as she really enjoys them. We don't plan on coming back later than 19th January so still have the option of doing her at our vet but just wondered if getting her done abroad was a realistic option.

I hadn't thought about having it done at the same time as we do the worming etc to come back home as mentioned by Koppersbeat which may not be a bad thing as she doesn't really like going to the vet (they stick needles in her for blood tests!) so it would mean one less trip for her.

Oh dear, that's a bummer! When can you come 'home'?

You can't enter the UK until three weeks after the vaccination according to this:

I'm not sure how that works if you are travelling before the current vaccination runs out but then if that is the case do you need to get her vaccinated at all? Of course you return might be delayed for unforeseen circumstances in which case you might be caught out..

I'm booked on tunnel again on 28th but I'll have to go through the worming saga again that I paid the vet in mailleraye surgery siene for ?

Lesson learned.

Not had any Belgian chocs yet been ill since I got here ? but soooooooon

The booster would be done BEFORE her existing one expires so no problem with having to wait 3 weeks as that's just for dogs who have it for the first time or have gone past the expiry date (as Tam's found out!).

If it looks like we'll be delayed or want to stay longer we'll just visit a vet and get her done before the old one runs out so again no problem with having to wait 3 weeks.

Was it done in Portugal because it's 3 years on ours and I believe Sundowners can confirm because they live in Portugal and have a dog and he was a Portuguese dog. ? Bob

That’s for travel TO the EU from the UK (after Brexit). As the page that you reference says “There will be no change to the current health preparations for pets entering Great Britain from the EU after Brexit.”.

I may be 'rabid' at times ? (especially when the dealer scratches my new motorhome! ) but as yet I don't' need any jabs for it! ?

Definitely three years. Changed his English passport to European. But our Zippy is English, Bob. You do need to ask for a three year one though.
