Lots now
Whats the weather like and are places still open/accessible in germany during the first 2 weeks of October.
We need to be back in the uk for the 30th October but I’m planning hopefully to not have to spend 2 weeks in quarantine if we go direct from Germany back to the uk via the tunnel.

Can’t help with what’s open but we returned from Germany direct to tunnel last week. Had our last night at Kevelaer. Great stellplatz an ex U.S. army base from the Cold War. Less than four hours to the tunnel. I will definitely be returning to Germany.

Have a read of this thread.

We've done Germany twice now towards the end of October and on both occasions the weather has been as warm as 24c. Stellplatz may be busy at weekends but you should be ok.

Thanks for the information and as it’s going to be from the 1st October that’s making feel a little better. It’s still going to be better than sitting in the motorhome for 2 weeks in the uk.

Fill up in Luxembourg before you go into Germany far cheaper overnight at Trier and follow the Mosel and the Rhine, Lots of little villages and small vineyards, some wines we don't get much in the UK worth trying and as other post. if you get a place on a Stellplatz on a weekend, stay there it gets very busy at weekends!

Thanks. We did this route 2 years ago but it was in the holiday period of summer I just wasn’t sure if it was still doable in October. Very happy to do it again as we did miss out places the first time. Yippee a plan is coming together I just need to get the tunnel booked now.

We traveled the Romantic road from the north to the Austrian border in early November 2018 and really enjoyed it,
lovely autumn colours and only one day of rain And warmed up progressively as we headed south ,
With all the kids at school and most at work it was delightful just taking our time sightseeing,

We found fuel in most of Bavaria/Black Forest cheap and we paid €1 a litre a couple of times.
Not sure if you still have to quarantine if you go into Luxembourg.
Aachen on our last night and straight to the train so no need to have another fortnight off.

I see we are practically neighbours Mr porky

Absolutely just down the road, however we never there as we do love to travel.

I don’t blame you, we are away as much as we can be normally.
The van this year has almost got square wheels 😩😂

We spent many years on the mosel at the end of September and October was perfect, they are picking the grapes and normally the wine festivals are on, and the walnuts are falling, what's not to like 😉 the best time to visit. 😁 Bob.

Also watching with interest. We have our first proper trip away in our new van last two weeks of September. Thinking of Germany but worried it may be too busy.

We are on a similar plan.
Cross on 27th Sept, Stop in France 28th to replenish dilapidated wine stocks, visit our dealer in Belgium on 29th then on to Germany returning on 26th Oct.

Do not do this on the return as both France and Belgium are not on the exempted list. The Aachen Stellplatz (€18 per.night) is convenient for the motorway and a fuel station - Aral (not cheap) is 400 metres away. Nice little part of the town with a pedestrianised shopping area and an easy walk from the stellplatz. Pitches are enormous and you are allowed to indulge in camping activities. Fill up with fuel in Germany, not Luxembourg (again not exempted), and spend the last night in Germany and use the tunnel unless you are prepared to be required to self isolate. The Immigration officer at the tunnel in France asked us where we had spent the night and where we bought our fuel a couple of weeks back and on saying "Aachen" to both he replied with "On your way then". I only had to get out after the immigration to have the gas checked by the tunnel staff. Ferries mean you have to self isolate as you have to get out of your vehicle whereas the tunnel you are not allowed out of your vehicle and the compartments in the train are locked as there are no toilets.

We have booked a tunnel crossing to ensure we don't have to isolate in the uk 🇬🇧 however even if it all changes and we have to isolate, we have enough time to make sure that it won't be an issue. Dentist is 30th October. 🙂

That is why we are going a day early so we can do the wine shopping on the way.

Not likely to do it but as I read it you can stop in France for fuel if you use automated pumps and don't have contact with anyone. So I don't see why you couldn't stop at an Aire on the way back providing you keep to yourself

Looks like it will be busy, we're on the tunnel 26th, heading for mosel for 2 weeks.

We cross on the 27th 😳
Heading for the Rhine probably 🤔😂

For the wine purchasers.

I had the same idea for buying my wine in france en route out.
I bought 10 boxes in germany having visited a weingut and tasted them all (for scientific purposes)
I m no connoiseur but 6 bottles or litres for £16 of decent vino plus the yet to buy dornfelder rheinessen trocken rotwein (equivelent but better than vin de table) at 1.49 euros in an edeka will see my reservoir replenished and i wont have carried it round with me all holiday.

You’re right Lenny, as it reads you can stop and get fuel as long as you pay at pump.
However, when we pulled up at the Tunnel, Border Control told us that if we had stopped to stretch our legs then we’d have to quarantine.
We stopped at Aachen at the pub (CC 7733) which is free to park, no services but good food and beer.
It’s right in the border and a fuel station a couple of hundred metres away.

I am planning the same, going out through the tunnel 0n 1st October for 1 month, but where would you stop for wine in France before heading to Germany. Cite Europe does not appeal. I can transit from Aachen on my return.

That sounds like a good call, the Stellaplatz is a bit pricy

We are going to stop at Grand fort Philippe, the Aire is next to the nature reserve on the coast so we can have a nice walk. There is a Super U on the way into Grand Fort Phillipe & they have our favorite wine at good prices.
A big Auchan at Dunkirk just off the A16 at junction 54. We always use to stop there but there tends to be immigrants around so if you do, leave someone in the van.
A bit further up the A16 there is a Carrefour on the way into Bray-Dunes, it has an Aire & services as well, we find Carrefour a bit pricy for the wines we like.

We are not keen on German wine OK when we are there but not to take home, an extra 30 or 40 kg of wine won't make a very big dent in our spare 300 kg of spare payload.

Like Rob we stopped at the pub at Aachen, very good food, quiet parking behind, I'd rather put the €17 towards a great meal 👍
