We are booked on the tunnel tomorrow
and have been driving round for a while trying to find somewhere to park. we don’t normally get this near to Calais for an overnight.
The gearbox seems only be working on Auto, even when I have it in manual. it’s a comformatic box on a 2 year old Carthago. it’s worked fine for the last couple of days, but when I pull the gear lever over and out of
auto it is still changing gear on its own. That’s up and down the gearbox. Any thoughts please.

Without trying to be funny I would leave it in Auto until you got home.

Just a chance check the gearbox oil
autos do funny things with low oil levels

:Eeek: :whistle2: (y)

Complete Guess, off the wall. But it could be a linkage issue?, I don`t think that box is "fly by wire" Is it?.

i don’t think I will have much option . The first Carthago we had was hard work. it had a terrible auto box, we are now on our third and I have got into the habit of not using it.
we will check the oil when we get home,

Here’s a link to the auto gearbox if that’s any help?

Thanks very much, I am using it as reading material whilst sat on the aire at Wissant. The place is heaving, cars parked on the verges for miles. I’m not sure if it’s a holiday, I know it Bastille day next week. we couldn’t get in a camp site and tried a few aires. one of them included reversing half a mile on a single track road, I didn’t try to argue with the combine harvester.

You are most welcome I’m glad we aren’t there, last time we were in France on Bastille day it was a nightmare with two dogs who don’t like fireworks😂😂😂
Enjoy your trip and try not to worry about the gearbox.👍

We rarely use manual on our comfortmatic gearbox.

The only time is on a very steep long access drive (400 metres) we use regularly in Spain, and we lock it in first gear going up, so it doesn't try to change into 2nd.

Hope you can resolve the issue, but in the meantime, as others have said, stick to auto until you get home.

Good luck! (y)

Bastille Day! We broke down once on Bastille day in France on a Honda motorbike, we were over 5 hours waiting for the breakdown truck in temperatures of 35C plus, turns out they were looking for a Honda car, got to the garage who were an Avis agent, can we hire a car? Non we will provide a taxi to your destination, ..........What E550 later, we arrived at our destination, all covered by Honda! We were due home in 5 days and were told that the bike could not be repaired until the following Tuesday so another E400 to take us to Arles airport and E750 for two flights back to UK , Liverpool(Everyone else had paid £10 to go and see a Bob Dylan concert in Arles!) No trains or buses so an extra £65 to hire a car to get home! By this time credit card starting to be questioned as to use! 1 Week later bike repaired, we can deliver it to you but it will take about a month! No its okay I will fly out and collect if you cover my expenses, No problem , flew out to Lyon, took TGV to St Etienne, overnight hotel picked up in morning by bike shop, full tank of petrol, overnight stop in Normandy and overnight ferry home next day. Honda provided a new set of tyres and the next five services free as a good will gesture. paid out in full and a voucher for £2000 off my next Honda car or bike! Top service
BMW? We had a wheel bearing go in Hampshire and contacted BMW assist, when looking at the sat nav realised we were about 500 yards from a BMW dealership, so said cancel the mechanic we can get there under our own steam, which we did, No parts in stock but will get them expressed over for tomorrow so find a hotel and BMW assist will cover. 6 Hotels and £300 later we found the only available hotel! Missed the ferry only to be told that the next available place was in four days time, no use as we had booked a gite for the week so came home. Put the claim in to BMW only to be told that as we had made it to the garage under own own steam without a mechanic attending at the roadside then we were not eligible for BMW assist ! Needless to say it was the last of a long line of BMW''s we have had or ever will own again, and before anyone says its us, we used to do around 22,000 miles a year on the bikes so well used not abused

Sorry it just brought back bad memories, keep it in auto till homel:cool:

Are you sure its faulty? The one I had, on a ford, would change gear in manual if it didn't like.the gear I chose, the car I have now does the same

This is one of the main reasons i took the 5 year warranty out from new

Hope you get it sorted

It’s out of warranty in 3 weeks time, when we bought it I didn’t know there was an option of extending the warranty.

It’s definitely changed the way it’s working, and it is showing the word auto on the display. We are leaving Wissant in the next hour, so I’m hoping it’s had a good nights sleep and it keeps running ok, I don’t mind if it’s auto or manual as long as it keeps going. We have until Wednesday to get Casper out of France or it’s another vets visit.

Thanks everyone for their advice. We left Wissant at 06.30 this morning and arrived back in North York's at 13.00. Twinkle didn't skip a beat, the gearbox worked as usual. She obviously had sun stroke, arriving back home she will have frostbite.
When I started the engine the auto sign had gone and it gave me the option of auto or manual. She is due a service before we go back to France so I'll get the garage to check for any problems.
One again many thanks.

Ask the garage, if the gear linkage is set up to specification?. Seems weird that it just happened and cured itself. As I said before I don't think those boxes are fly by wire?. Some years back we had a car which relied on a Bowden cable to get reverse gear. It went out of sync as the cable streached and would not engage.

As the gtee is up within 3 weeks I would get it checked out now explaining to them what happened & see what they say & if there are anu ecu updates ?
That way if it then becomes a problem a few months down the line you can at least argue for Fiat to foot the bill as there was a reported problem before the gtee period ended.

The gear selector is just a switch. There’s no mechanical linkage to the gearbox, or at least that’s my understanding. Sounds like it may just be a switch problem... it didn’t know it was in manual even though you’d moved the gear selector to manual.

Hopefully not too much of a problem.

Get it booked in with fiat before this runs out so you have the problem logged, if its done it once it will do it again. These are not cheap to fix try and get it done whilst under warranty
