Have not fitted my gasit to van yet but considering taking it with me when I go over Europe shortly.I have another half full 6kg Calor on board and hope to get the Gasit filled without fixing it permanently in van.I have the fittings and half meter flexy pipe connected to it and its in the gas c/board behind back door? Also how does the gauge work as it only clips onto bottle?

Strange? I had new Gas-It 11kg bottle installed on Thursday and filled it for the first time today. :D

Ours has a gauge on top of the bottle, much like 6kg Calor-lites. As far as I know, it doesn't clip on??

The fitter advised that it works on a float principle, but that on first fill the needle can be sticky. But he said that after a short drive all would be well, just needed a couple of bumps on the road to free it.

And sure enough, he was dead right. Needle barely moved when the tank was filled, but - as if by magic - we were indicating a full tank by the time we got home! ;) (y)

Yes definitely just clips on-nothing connecting it to bottle, its a 6kg though.

We have a similar gauge on one of our Gaslow bottles and they do indeed just clip on ... I've no idea how they work but assume there is some sort 'field' that reaches from the internal level to the gauge, ours just has a plastic clip affair which broke so I secured it with a cable tie and it still works perfectly (well as perfectly as it ever did!).

This might explain how refillables work.

But like you I cannot understand how a clip on gauge works. On ours, It reads FULL for a while then within a short space of time it goes into the RED. When that happens, it only takes about 11 litres (about half its capacity) to FILL it up again.

I would install the gasit with an internal filler ( temporariliy) until you can fit the filler cap properly and leave the calor bottles behind -certainly the half full one as that will be surplus weight and space when empty and you cant fill calor in france.

Do you think a garage will fill it up like that then?

Havent bothered yet will do later on.
Just thinking the possibility of an accident. Not fixed might cause unbelievable problems.

Magnet in bottle, magnet in gauge. One follows the other. Just the same with tanks fitted under the motorhome.

Where the gauge clips on is a tube and the gauge work by the magnet being attached to the float, in the gauge is also a magnet which is connected to the gauge needle so as the float rises and falls it pulls the magnet on the gauge which in turn moves the gauge needle. Have a look at image @namwaldog posted above.

You will need to fix the filler point to a bracket or similar, I didn't mean to advocate having a filler on the end of a flexi hose just waving about. My gaslow bottles are fixed in the gas locker and so is the fill point. I had no issues filling anywhere in France Spain or Portugal with the filler nozzle inside the gas locker. I assumed by the way you posted that you would be taking the gasit system loose as additional bottles to your calor system.I would take those out and put the gasit bottles in the locker and if you haven't time , fix the fill nozzle to a temporary internal bracket, sturdy enough to take the weight of the fill gun and hose.

It is strapped in the gas c/board in back of van.

Thanks will carry a half full Calorlite for emergency and the 6kg Gasit with the pipe and bracket fixed inside.

You MAY have problems filling over here (we are in France - we have Gasit with external filler) some places are OK some are not - a lot prefer to have an external filler so they are sure you are not trying to use one of those adapters that fit a normal cylinder which are prone to leaking and going boom
other wise ditch the Calor go the whole hog - I actually fitted ours myself then had an engineer do a leak test for peace of mind before we filled the system even the external filler is easy if you have the tools

Are there any other, more accurate, gauges to be had other than the clip on jobs?
