Garmin Camper 770 - Shouldn’t dimensions read as Minimum instead of Maximum?

I’m a bit flummoxed about setting the dimensions on this unit.

When it asks for max height, shouldn’t it really be asking “what is the minimum height your vehicle can fit through/under” ??

So my vehicle is 2.990m high.

I don’t want to go through any bridge less than this height (obviously); so if I set height maximum to 2.990m, how does it work.

To my mind, maximum only looks at the highest point not the lowest that I can go through.

Am I missing something here?

TIA

I had similar, my van was 2990 so I put 3000 in otherwise if you put in the exact measurements it could be a bit tight on those bridges...😆

It's asking the size of the vehicle to plan a route to take the dimensions of the vehicle.
I've increased the figures to be extra sure.
It still takes you some crazy routes though.

ours tried to take us through on a route that had a max height of 2.4 m, , we are 3m high so dont believe a word it says, it also takes us through the centre of villages when there is a perfectly good ringroad/bypass. anyone know how to fix this Im all ears

Do you have it set for Shortest route rather than fastest maybe?

Useful as the satnav can be, I always check and follow the route on a map. Find this extremely useful when you hit a diversion which mentions place names. Just following the satnav you don’t really know what the next town is.

Maybe by maximum height it means the highest point on your vehicle when its unloaded thereby at it's maximum height? Maximum width could mean at the widest point with the mirrors fully out.

Ours wanted to take us along one side of a French river where the better , shorter and more direct road was on the other side. We had driven that way several years before in a bigger van so I checked the map. There were some low bridges marked but they were all on roads going off from the main route. We followed the map with no problems.

The problem I find with setting dimensions is that it will plan a 20 mile detour to avoid a perfectly good A road. And still not know about the narrow, foliage-filled, road with a narrow hump-back bridge. So I leave it set on Car and read the road signs.

The issues above occur when you blindly follow satnav instructions, they are only as good as the maps they use.

Much better to create your own routes, (using a decent map), then download to your device.

That's what I use Garmin BaseCamp for. (y)

Exactly.. (though I prefer Mapsource). 👌
Never used Mapsource however I have heard a number of folk saying they can't get used to BaseCamp if they have previously used Mapsource!

That was my 'problem' as a long term user of Mapsource, I did learn to use Basecamp, when rumours about the demise of Mapsource were circulating, but that never happened, all the latest map updates from Garmin work fine on Mapsource, so I carried on using it.
