Anyone following our little jaunt down to Croatia for Ironman will know that we arrived in the beautiful sunny 🌞 very sunny 🌞 Porec Croatia.

For info only, not looking to get in to a discussion... but there we were sat outside enjoying the sun when a lovely couple came over for a chat.

English couple, who full-time in their motorhome. However not Spain or Portugal like most, they have made a life for themselves in Croatia. They applied for residency via some helpful people they got to know whilst living in the MH.

They said the whole process took 6 months and they met very little resistance.

Beautiful place here in a beautiful country as is Slovenia. Might be worth a look.

The site we are on is 1100 euros for 5 months over winter plus electric, so seemed quite reasonable for them.

Nice little place too, when my time comes I would certainly consider it.

Out of interest where exactly is this site, presumably near Poreč.

Enjoy your visit, we cycled from Trieste to Pula last month and enjoyed a couple of nights in Porec. We thought the food at Pizzeria Napoli there was also very tasty.

I think they call it Pollidoor, although to be fair the whole landscape is camping. Certainly wouldn't want to be there in the summer

Winter offer is a bargain. (y)

Sounds good.
What is the countryside like and are the roads good or just dirt and dust?

Very civilised, pretty much everyone speaks English, even the numerous Germans ..

Been out on the main roads on my Tri Bike and they are a little hairy from the cars but plenty of off road cycling.

Only complaint so far is that I've been eaten alive by mosquitos. But they go soon apparently.

Full timing on a site wouldn't be for me, but it's a great place for those who can cope with it I'm sure.

They tell me its not quite as warm as Portugal but its not far off..

No, I don’t fancy full timing on a site, a few months is all I can stand then off to new pastures!

I reckon

Winter is likely to be pretty cold in Croatia, even parts of Greece get snow etc.
That's what I thought until I done the research for this area.

66 percent sunshine temps around 10-18 dg.
Can drop to 0 at night though, but only 20mm of rainfall from December to February

It certainly can get rather chilly in the winter. The picture below is of me walking Nix in Paklenica National Park (well south of Poreč) in January 2022, when we were lurking in Croatia for 3 months to be out of the Schengen zone. It is as cold as it looks.

But four days later it was much warmer:

However, there is also the Bora to take into account ........

I think Croatia is now in Schengen?
If so how do you get around rge 90/180 days rules if over wintering?
That was the purpose of the post.

The couple we met, applied for residency and got it with little resistance despite living in their motorhome.
They are now residents of Croatia 🇭🇷 live in their van and enjoy life.
They mentioned having to have about 10k in the bank but other than that they were helped by the locals they met who nominated them or something similar.

Ah!
I did think that my question was silly, a sebior moment!
Potentially excellent news, thanks.

I believe that a residency permit in a Schengen country allows a 3rd country citizen to travel within Schengen for 90 days in 180 days.

You need to be a citizen of a Schengen country to gain freedom of movement within Schengen.
Having said that I'm not having the best of days :D

I believe you're correct however that does raise an interesting question in whether you can travel into another schengen country in transit to or from your country of residence and your home country or would you have to fly in and out?

That's correct, technically... however how on earth would someone know that if you moved around the EU? There are no borders between countries.

Granted, this may be the case if they were criminals being sought by interpol but I rather expect that Mr and Mrs nobody arent really going to pulling up any trees about getting caught.

In my case, I'm a Portuguese passport holder and citizen. Slightly wierd this one, as I can travel like any other EU citizen with no restrictions as before any of this became an issue for some people. Portugal allows for "dual citizenship" for people like myself where i can be a citizen of Portugal but also reside outside of the EU.

When I crossed this time, I used my Portuguese passport, my wife used our marriage certificate and that was that.. no stamping of passports or anything similar..

I've seen the couple passing our van a few times today, desperately seeking a chat, I'll ask how long they have to wait to become citizens of Croatia if they haven't already and I've got it wrong.

Perhaps they'd like to join Fun and tell their story?

I'm in Croatia now. Shocking expensive for motorhome parking after Bosnia, Serbia, Montenegro and certainly in comparison with France, Spain, Germany Italy etc. As nice as it is, it comes across as quite a rip off county to be honest. Struggled to find anywhere official to park up tonight and ended up paying 23 euros to park in a municipal swimming pool car park. Looking for somewhere on the coast (northern end) and it's not cheap, even in October.

I spent 3 weeks in Croatia in November a few years back and it was cold and not very warm. I can't imagine a winter to be very pleasant.

I arrived in Croatia yesterday, currently on Krk and first impressions are that’s a really lovely part of the world.

VXman, I phoned to book ahead but was told no need as they had plenty of space and there are indeed lots of empty spaces here.

We're still in Croatia. We've had free parkups in Zadar, Murter and Sibenik, but they are few and far between. No free aires. Paid aires are extortionate for what they offer. We knew that though and got an ACSI card before leaving home. Sites are not normally our thing, but they are the best option here. €21 or €23 per night (with ACSI card) including EHU, water on the pitch, decent facilities including pools and direct beach access. They are good value by UK standards! Shame though that there isn't a system of cheap aires like France and Germany.

Yes, we really liked Krk too, especially Baska in the south of the island. Pretty town in a lovely bay, surrounded by mountain ranges on both sides.

Well it's glorious sunshine down here in Porec. And I don't think the quoted prices are that expensive at all? 1100e for.5 months? Whats that a Night..

Clearly the couple here love it, the examples above are about touring, not living full time on a site. Anyone can make an opposite case for that. It's like saying, I went to Britain in the summer and it was right miserable before stating you were in northern Scotland and my experience was one of being in Cornwall.

You need to watch Croatian campsites with Acsi, Tourist tax? Yes that happens, municipality tax as well? And one at Trogir charged us extra because the pitch we selected was a prmium pitch - they said as I queried why the bill was so much higher.

We've been to Croatia several times now and have noticed how much it has moved on, new roads, generally posher, but the whole package has gone a lot more expensive. Big difference to even 10 years ago.

For Me it's just a strange place to stay for 5 months in the one place over winter. Its cheap because most motorhomers wouldn't want to .

It's going to be cold and wet

You don't have to stay there for a full 5 months to get the discounted rate - the minimum stay is 30 days.

It might well be cold at times but it's not likely to be wet. The 3 months that we were in Croatia over winter we saw very little rain.

For me it's strange that anyone would want to spend 3 weeks or more in an 8 x 3 box made of tin with a plastic toilet no bath and a crap oven and no gym.

But that's because we are all different. The post wasn't about motorhome styles or locations just simply what one lovely couple have decided to do and how they've gone about it. They clearly love it.

We canned are summer trip to Crotia high summer i know but over £80 per night.
