Fuel gauge issue

Hi I have a fiat ducato 2002 2ld. The fuel gauge is stuck about half way no matter how far I drive. How do i know if its the dial or something wrong in the tank.

I don't have much practical knowledge of motorhomes I'm afraid.

Sometimes just pulling dash forward and disconnecting the cables and pushing securely back on is enough to clear older dash board faults.

Sounds like the float is stuck on the sender in the tank

Some times it just needs three bolts out, slide it out, clean up and reinstall

Back in the summer we drove to the South of France and back, topping up at every fuel station as the fuel gauge on our Hymer B534 on a 2000 Fiat Ducato was swinging from full to empty and vice versa in a matter of a few km. Very nerve racking journey. Now back home we still haven't looked at the problem but hope it's as simple to sort as you suggest ! Any other tips would be welcome !! Thanks.

I had a problem with my fuel gauge, it would read full and then empty and then anything in between.
I followed the advice in another forum and disconnected a grey multi connector under the dash and sprayed with wd40 and that sorted it. But I still write down mileage and fill in around 300 mile mark as I don’t trust the gauge.

That's exactly what our gauge was doing and it was very disconcerting. We'd started out with a full tank while she was stationary - decanted diesel from our two cars which were going to the scrapyard. Halfway to Newhaven, about 40 miles, the gauge dropped to half full then empty and kept doing it for 800 miles and 800 on the return !! Not a relaxing journey. I do all the driving now as John is 90 and not as quick as he used to be. Being constantly told "Don't worry about it" from the passenger seat does not help !!!!

It may be possible to check which is faulty. On the tank sender unit detatch the wire and connect it to an earth point. Switch ignition on and if the fuel gauge goes to full the gauge is ok.

I'll get John on this next week. We're off to Dieppe for a few days to celebrate my 80th birthday. Car and hotel this time and better MPG bearing in mind the fuel problems at the mo !!

Drove Roses (Spain) to Toulouse via A 9 and A61 this afternoon. Diesel at all stations except two which were having major renovations.
