It's been a while since we used the long ferry but is there still a budget fuel forecourt, on a roundabout, near the port at Santander, I can't locate it on the satnav?

Easygas, don’t exit port by signs. Exit to Santander Cuidad.

Over first one way, turn left on to second set of lights. As you join main highway, keep right and look out for exit into service station. It’s easily missed and if you do miss it, you can’t get back.

If you are heading Zarragoza route, there are two cheap options en-route.

Alcampo Haro, was simply supermarket.
