This is now the second time that we have had to pay out a lot of money (£450) to replace the air conditioning condenser on our cars due to stone damage despite never taking either off road - first a Citroen & now a Ford & looking at where our condenser is on the motorhome can see that is very vulnerable too  We understand that car dealerships have regular work replacing these due to stone damage so not just our bad luck.
This is our Transit motorhome one

Having searched for solutions found two viable options - the pretty, easy but expensive one & DIY option both available in stainless steel.
This is the pretty one https://www.zunsport.com/en which do versions for many makes of cars but with regards to motorhomes they do it for Citroen Relay (our next motorhome :)) https://www.zunsport.com/en/citroen-grilles/citroen-relay-front-grille-set but currently not Fiat Ducato or Ford Transit :(
5%20Citroen%20Relay%20Upper%20Grille%20-%20Black-345x345.jpg

For the DIY version we found this UK manufacturing company who sell direct with free delivery on all their items (y) We have narrowed the mesh choice down to this stainless steel option as suitable for car grilles as still allows adequate air flow whilst giving a lot of protection.

For our Transit based motorhome it is easy to access the rear interior of the bumper & attach it with strong cable ties. The above option costs £22.99 delivered with some mesh to spare. It shouldn't be that visible from the front.
Another option that might be preferable if the mesh is visible through your bumper is this more expensive diamond version

For our application this is £29.99 with no spare mesh but depends on size required.
On my autosleeper I simply paid 4 x £0.99 for some black silicone cooking mesh and used a hot glue gun to stick it to the inside of the front. Unobtrusive and cheap. Still there when I sold the vehicle three years later

Interesting budget option but not sure that type of mesh would have stopped the big stone that damaged ours! Difficult to fix anything to the back of some grilles or make it look tidy so the expensive option was the only viable one for our car but at least the DIY stainless steel mesh version worked for the Transit grille (y)

If you cut flush with the horizontals you can avoid the bent over wires effect. A rapid sweep with a grinder or sander will blunt the sharp ends.

The silicone mesh is very tough stuff - it has what looks like Kevlar mesh coated with the silicone. I’m certain that it could take the full force of a large stone at speed.

At present, white cab and black grille so it made sense for the Zunsport grille to be black as well.

As well as being a bit of a tart and wanting our van to look good, another big reason for buying threZunsport grille was the increased protection it offers the rads from stone and debris damage.
Our van has done less than 6,000 miles and here's a photo of some of the hits part of the rad has taken already.

Wow - that photo is pretty shocking! Ours on post 27 of page 2 of this thread was our car one that had to be replaced at 13000 miles.
The black grille set is smart & ours fitted to our car last June still looks like new.

What effect if any do these have on airflow to the radiator and stuff? There will be a reason why the vehicle manufacturer left the grille largely open.

The mesh the Zunsport grille is quite open but of course there must be some reduction in the airflow going through them but I doubt enough to cause any over heating problems.
I very much doubt Zunsport will product and market something that would cause problems that will have then in court and paying out for trashed engines.

As with anything with vehicle manufactures, it's down to cost, which is to fit something that looks good using the minimum amount of materials at the minimum cost to produce and fit.

One of my main reasons I bought the grille set was to protect the radiators which the vehicle manufacturer seems to not give a toss about.

Grille kit now fitted, literally a 15 minute job.

I think I'll pop the centre grille out and paint the area behind it matt black as I'm not keen on the white showing through.

After

As there were no sharp or rough edges on the grilles, I just used masking tape where the clips were.
