this was to be our first motorhome. Second hand from a large dealer, waited a month from collection. Picked up on Saturday. Rear bumper had not been replaced with new as promised, just a bad repair, step not working wasn't too happy. On the drive home orange spanner light came on, so parked up and did not stop out as planned that night. Today the van was picked up by a worker this morning to repair step and dropped of this afternoon with step working but, chip in windowscreen, indicators clicking different speeds(they have put different make lights on rear bumper as I would of had to wait 2 weeks and our holiday is booked), and now fans in van rattling(air con). This has been a bad experience, rang up tonight and want my money back. We have not been able to use the van yet, and don't want to drive this abroad to have more issues.
The van is on hp, so I am hoping this is an easy process and to just cancel.

Sad to hear your experience. ...not a very nice dealer....I do hope you get your money back. Don't be put off though....not all dealers are the same.

That is terrible. I bought ours years ago from Brownhills and some had issues with them. I just had 1. After a week, the rear boot lock broke and they wanted to charge me £35.00 to replace. I chucked the keys at them and said 'Give me my money back' and I'll be here every day to tell potential customers that you don't honour any warranty.
Guess what? They replaced free of charge. By the way

@familytime I would ask to speak to the owner of the company if my memory serves me right he is called Glen and Cindy his wife was also a director.
I found her very helpful when we had a problem with one of the lafuma chairs we had bought from them.

At this point with not having even used the van, I do not feel comfortable using the it to travel to France on Thursday. If the indicators pack up or I have issues this is not going to be good let alone abroad. I will be returning the van as it is not fit for purpose and hopefully get a refund and cancel hp straight away. I can't believe the van has been in the workshop today and then returned to me with faulty indicators.

Sorry but what sort of value are we talking about here, as faulty indicators and a rattling fan don't seem to add up to the end of the world to me , and even a chip in the windscreen is nothing to write home about if it's out of the line of sight.
Sounds a bit like buyers remorse to me , can't see how you will get your money back, I'm afraid.

It is the amount of faults for a newish vehicle. If it was a few years old and I hadn't paid 35k I would be more understanding. Not for it to be coming from repair with more faults for something I haven't used. The law has changed and you can now return a vehicle within 30 days of purchase if faulty.

As far as I understand things, ( and the newer laws may have changed some details) if you have a finance agreement or HP as you state, then it’s not your vehicle to reject. This doesn’t mean you can’t reject it, but you will need to speak to the finance company as the vehicle really belongs to them.
The vehicle has to be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and free of any defect, but I believe the defect has to have been there when you bought it, not materialised ( or caused by the dealer) after you bought it.
You will also need to give the garage at least one attempt to repair the vehicle to your satisfaction

If you intend to return the vehicle to the dealer I suggest you contact the HP company at the same time as they will help to put pressure on the dealer should you need it.

On 3rd van so not a total newbie....
I know how you feel about this, we has issues with our first van, and we ended up returning it, we got a full refund without issue, we have now bought a new dethleffs which seems to be built much better.
Persevere, decide what you want and stick to it.

Thanks for your advice. I think I am fully entitled to return it as some of the faults( bumper and indicators) I identified at point of sale and got written conformation. After sleeping on it( not very well) I am definitely decided on returning it. Hopefully first thing this morning so I can try and salvage a holiday

Ive not given the name of the dealer as if I have no problem getting my money back it would be wrong to name and shame.

i think I would be e mailing them the facts and stating that their failure to resolve the problems has led to you requiring your money back (if you paid a deposit) and when you will be dropping it off. Copy to the finance company and cancelling the direct debit.

If the Citizens Advice Bureau still exist I'm sure they can give you free legal advice to be confident of your obligations and rights.

Sorry to hear your tale, I would be most worried by why the spanner light came on. Did they give an explanation for that?
Expect the dealer to wriggle and squirm if you tell them you are rejecting the vehicle, but as you say the law is on your side now. There are some poor dealers about and if more customers took your line perhaps they would sharpen their act up.
Not a lot of help in the circumstances but if this experience hasn't put you off and you get another motorhome I suggest you plan to have a couple of days away locally before taking it overseas. Even a night on the drive will help determine if everything internally is working and whether you have brought all the necessary bits and bobs - corkscrew, hosepipe for filling etc etc. :)

Terrible experience for you, hope all turns out ok, as you say van is not fit for purpose and you have obviously lost faith in the product!
Good luck.

@davanne how do you know where the op bought the van? as I can't see it in the post.

Or am I going dolally :)
Sorry if I've given out information but Family time mentioned the area in his other thread and as I lived in the north west until last year I realised who the dealer is but I haven't mentioned them by name. I was only trying to help but I should maybe have pm'd family time.
If this is wrong maybe @Jim could remove my post.

The Orange spanner light is just telling you the Van is due a service. Did they service it before you bought it? Its possible they did but dont know how to reset the service light - it does go off after a while though. Might be worth pointing out to them when you hand it back.

You need to get proper legal advice on your rights as a consumer. The easiest step is to contact the trading standards office appropriate to where your bought the motorhome and they will give you advice although in my experience it's not always 100% accurate.

Secondly, you may find you have legal advice as part of your house insurance. If so they will put you in touch with specialists in consumer law.
You have good protection under the Consumer Rights Act of 2015, considerably better than that afforded by the Sale of Goods Act.

Another method of obtaining absolute rock solid advice is to subscribe to Which Legal. It costs about £100 but the advice is up to date.

Do not believe anyone who tells you that all you have to do is throw the keys back at them, it's infinitely more complex than that. I've had 3 years of legal advice about my motorhome and some of the advice has not always been what I wanted to hear. Good luck with your mission.

The orange spanner can come on at anytime after the date or mileage from last service and is nothing more than just a warning , nothing to do with any problem and in the instruction book it tells you how to switch it off, something like turning the key so many times or something, indicators nothing more than a different bulb in , windscreen can be mended on lots of supermarket car parks , none of them a big deal.

I have not named this dealer. And the outcome is they have taken the vehicle back and refunded the money due to the faults. I think this was the fair thing to do and hopefully it was just the vehicle. Im going to salvage some sort of holiday, and then look again after.

Do you think as they have done right by you ,you should name them I know who they are but I guess it's up to you. I think they have done right by you and perhaps deserve a bit of credit but I might be wrong .

I think to some people the issues can be fixed, which i agree. But when you have issues straight away and then more crop up before you have even used it, i see this as hassle that i don't want or to pay for. Once all paper work has been sent back and confirmed I will credit the dealer and names, as i think would be fair. I also thanks members on here for your advice and support, it is a real community and we are going to take away something good from this.

Nice result, although I agree with above, I reckon you got lucky or they are a must better dealer than you thought :)(y)

going forward though, it is almost inevitable that whatever used MH you do buy will develop a fault or 2 that you hadn't seen or noticed, but quite possibly neither had the seller (y)
