Are these things just for storage, should they be on or off when the fridge is working or does it depend on Gas or Elecric use?

You can use covers in cold weather. (IIRC most manuals will suggest when temp is below 10'c). Otherwise the fridge will start to overcool everything.

Sounds daft, but they help retain some of the heat so that the fridge will be working within it's operating temperatures. Thus avoiding having to thaw your beer before you drink it :)

And, they should definately be off in hot weather, otherwise your fridge will not get cool

Quite right too.

Some folk (like me) have also fitted a small 12v PC style fan on the top vent to help expel the air during hot times.

Just like your fridge at home, the MH one relies on the ambient temperature being between set points to allow the fridge to function correctly. However your fridge at home is unlikely to be find itself being parked in the alps one trip and then some nice hot spanish resort the next.

Thus if the ambient temp is too hot or too cold you need to take extra steps. Hence covers for cold weather and maybe a fan for real hot weather.
