Still trying to find the right MH and wanted to pick your knowledgeable brains on here, we want a fixed bed, but when we’ve looked a a couple of french bed styles we were put off because they were not a full sized double width (135cm) so have been looking at transverse beds which seem bigger, however the combination of transverse bed and front lounge appears to be pretty rare so I’m back to looking at french bed layouts, does anyone know of any that are full sized width of a double bed ( excluding the cut off bit)?
we are on a budget of up to £30k so no shinny new examples please 😞
Thanks

I think any french bed layouts that have the shower/toilet on the side will always have the smaller bed.
The layout with the shower across the back of the mh seem to have larger beds.
Our current Bailey 75-2 has a french bed with side toilet and the bed is slightly bigger than our previous Majestic 155.
The new 79-2f has the shower across the full width of the rear and the bed looks more like a true double.
There are drawbacks of the french bed layout which you might not have thought of like having to climb over your partner in the night for toilet trips there are other downsides.

We've had two french bed models and they are almost a double. 135 mm is 4'5". A domestic double is 4'6". We could slide out the bottom of both the French beds. We avoided transverse beds because of the need of someone climbing over the other. Same with drop down, can't climb ladders any more. We have now moved onto two single so we can have a garage for security of the bikes

Our next Mh will have singles for the same reasons. We want the garage(y)

Our first van had a huge French bed it was a Hymer Tramp T654 SL, the bed was 7ft long and near enough 4'6" wide. Kept it nearly 6 years from new only changed as wanted a garage, last 2 vans have had twin singles as we wanted a big garage and an A Class.

ive not measured it but our burstner french bed feels about the same as the one at home for width

Full width rear transverse double models with front lounge were very popular for European motorhomes until about 8 years or so ago when twin singles or longitudinal island doubles took over. The problem with a transverse double is that one person has to climb over the other when they need to get to loo, and that is not so much fun when you are older.

If that does not put you off, look for quality A classes 10 year plus old and you will find plenty of good examples in your price range. In fact there is a really nice Frankia i8000 only just over your top limit in MHF's classified ads. They have always had a very good reputation for build quality.

Our Rapido 999M has the French bed the bathroom is behind with a narrow-ish access?. Have not actually measured it but we cope adequately and both reckon we sleep as well as at home on the Queen-size!.

We had a 2010 Swift Kon-Tiki 679 with rear transverse bed, front lounge, Tandem Axle 8.5m 5,000Kg GVM. Does need a C! licence. Also as an over garage bed you have to climb a little bit.

As a thought only issue with French & transverse beds are the need for the inboard person to climb over the other to get out!

Was great for space no issues with payload, Honda pcx in the garage (have a Fiamma carry-moto already adapted for the garage if anybody wants one)

Sadly may be a case of going to one of the large dealers with tape measure, camera and iron resolve not to be sold anything until you've finished your research. Alternately you spend a bit of time downloading tech manuals to check bed sizes after spotting a layout that looks promising.

Good luck, let us know how you get on.
