So.

My next 2 trips I fancy doing (in winter)

Id like to find somewhere I can park up either for free or for the cost of a pint & dinner at a pub etc. One I really want is a nice lake view. To be able to park side on so I can have the main living area window open looking out over a lake with an uninterrupted view (ie no other people looking in at me)

The 2nd trip id like would be a Christmas market??

Im in Chesterfield area so ideal 2-2.5 hours drive from here would be ideal.

Anyone got any places they went and can recommend?

Gravelines a few years ago. Not a lake but I read on here that the Christmas market is good. @chaser

The site I most like to meet some of your rather specific requirements is Lyndon Top on Rutland Water where you can get away with parking side on at quieter times. However, all grass and so not sure if open this time of year, oh …. and it’s not free 🤣

If you open up google maps and set it to a reasonable area around you, you can then just put “camping pubs” into the search box and it comes up with lots of interesting ideas and you can see if water nearby. One I looked at is Knockerdown Inn, but again not free and anyway now camping now closed for winter.

Thanks... it doesn't need to be free free.... but rather than £30 for a caravan club site id rather spend £30 in a local pub that will let me stay in. Or a token payment.

David a lake or shore line ????
Angelsey - The Bull Inn

A bit further Away We really like the Never Turn Back at Caister for food can't be beaten and you can stop for 2-3 nights

Can't help with Christmas Markets

The Bull in looks nice.

As for Lake or Shore line...... Ill narrow it to water.... could be a canal. lake. river. Reservoir. Coast..... So long as it's a nice water view.

If the Bury St Edmunds Christmas market is on this year, then it's not a bad shout. Rams meadow car park has motorhome parking - we went a couple if years ago but no specific Moho spaces left, so I phoned the car parking number displayed and got permission - no issues whatsoever !!

The Victorian Christmas Market in Stratford upon Avon is a themed event with stall holders dressed in Victorian costumes.
Advertised at over 300 stalls, live entertainment and a traditional funfair.
The market will open at 11am on Thursday 9 December and will run until 8pm. Then on Friday 10th December and Saturday 11th December, the market will be open from 10am to 8pm. On Sunday 12 December, it will close at 5pm.

No lake but plenty of river, the council may advise on parking. Birmingham Christmas market is well under way already, but hardly motorhome friendly.

How about Chester - overnight parking at Little Roodee carpark overlooking the river (if you get the right spot) and they have a Xmas market I believe. Kill 2 birds with one stone!😉

Ladybower Inn sounds nice. Not been but says views over reservoir and free if buying meal!

Done that one before. Bit awkward view as your forward facing the water down the hill but its nice enough. Pubs ok. Food ok. Only about 10min from where I used to live with the Ex wife.
