Don't know how many of you know this, I didn't, but Julie has bought an old triumph herald to do up, turns out it doesn't need an MOT , tax is free, insurance £100 , as long as it's road worthy you don't need anything else,
Does the same apply to old motorhomes, I think 1976 is the cut off date for vintage vehicles.
Might be a market for them(y)(y):)

Downside ... crossply tyres no seatbelts/ABS/Airbags/crumple zone terrible cornering especially from a herald with its independent rear suspension tucking in, then you have noise and heavy fuel consumption and a uncomfortable ride to boot,
No sooner stick with something more modern and ? pay

Cool idea if you are good at mending things.............which I isn’t! Otherwise the maintenance costs and fuel may make it a pain in the arris.(n)

MOT - £50
Tax - can be £0 to £30 with say a Fiesta
Insurance - about the same depending on experience, maybe a bit more.

So, agree that a modern vehicle is better overall. I do have a 1977 Suzuki GT380 which is also MOT and tax exempt but compared with my modern bikes I wouldn't want to do anything involving many miles.

I guess it also applies to MoHos over 40 years old. Why not?

its the same thing for a rolls, jag , Ferreri , tractor, steam roller, anything if its old , so i presume motorhomes.

I had a herald convertible once when I was young and foolish, never again.... ;)

I THINK it is for vehicles manufactured or registered 40+ years ago but starts on Jan 1st following year.

So now it would be 1978 or older.

if someone is considering buying an old vw or similar its worth thinking about for what may only a couple of years difference

Vehicles more than 40 years old are exempt from VED, vehicles built before 1960 are exempt from MOT.

Or tax

Eligibility
The date your vehicle was built or first registered affects whether you need to:
  • get an MOT
  • pay vehicle tax
Vehicles that do not need an MOT
You do not need to get an MOT if:
  • the vehicle was built or first registered more than 40 years ago
  • no ‘substantial changes’ have been made to the vehicle in the last 30 years, for example replacing the chassis, body, axles or engine to change the way the vehicle works
If you’re not sure if there have been any substantial changes you can:
Vehicles exempt from vehicle tax
You do not need to pay vehicle tax if your vehicle was built before 1 January 1979.
If you do not know when your vehicle was built, but it was first registered between 1 and 7 January 1979, you do not have to pay vehicle tax.

You do have to register it as an historic vehicle. Do it online

strange really int it , you would think at that age they would be more vin need of an mot.

I hadn't realised they had changed the pre-1960 MOT rule.

But in a class of its turning circle. :D

I used to love Heralds/spitfires etc and had many of them. I did all my own repairs then and they were the easiest vehicles to do anything with. Yes they were rust buckets and didn't do a lot to the gallon, but at around 20p a litre or less it didn't matter much.

Is that the two stroke triple cylinder job?
I had one in the dark & distant. I'm working with a rather foggy memory lol.
Yes. Lovely looking bike.

Low MPG. Hard to upkeep. Handle badly. But just LOVELY!

It's everything,my freinds are still into there vw splitscreens and baywindows which are exempt personaly i like a double bed and luxury and happy to pay for would go back to that again :D

I had one as a field car as a kid.
The left hand rear tie bar tore out of the body mount and thanks to the transverse leaf spring the arse end would swing right on acceleration and left on braking.
It was only the spring center mount and right hand tie bar stopping the tyre hitting the wheel arch .

Is it an original steel bonnet or a fibre glass one ?
body all original mate, bloke had gone through it , spitfire engine , brakes and steering all done all filled and sanded and undercoated, just want final finishing and spraying, then he sadly died and his son sold it julie, she wanted it because she had one , as her first motor.
