We have a Hymer motorhome, bought new in 2013 and for as long as we can remember it has been tricky to fill the fresh water tank as it tended to cough water back out of the inlet if we tried to fill it too quickly. Finally, last week it became so bad that it was obvious something was blocking the pipe. By removing a small panel under one of the beds, my hubby just about manged to see the bottom of the filler pipe using a torch and inspection mirror through a hole in the double floor area. He could see something yellow blocking the pipe close to where it enters the tank which is fitted between the two floors. Unfortunately, in order to disconnect the pipe he had to enlarge the hole to gain access. Would you believe it, a hosepipe nozzle was the culprit and it isn’t one we have ever used. We can only think a dealer must have used a hose during one of the habitation checks we were obliged to have whilst the van was still under warranty, lost the nozzle and said nothing about it. Lovely! The photos tell the story and, just to be clear, hubby does intend to improve the shape and finish of the new hole to blend it in with the original. It will be hidden anyway once the panel above it is put back in place.

I have done this myself in the distant past, luckily was able to retrieve the offending article. I use one of those filler caps with the hozelock attachment now. unlikely to come off and too big to go down the hole if it does.

Me too. School boy error.
Managed to retrieve it with welding wire with bend on end 👌
I know. If only whoever lost it had fished it out right away before it moved all the way down the pipe it would have saved us a lot of wasted time over the years standing around waiting for water to slowly trickle into the tank. Not to mention yesterday's difficulties diagnosing and rectifying the problem.

Well done.......lot of hassle but determination has won the day!

I carry one of these in my van. Bit of an esoteric tool. But handy for looking behind cupboards, under floor spaces etc etc.

For £10 don't expect brilliant image quality or anything else. But it gets the job done in a pinch.

We used to use the same and never had a problem with it however was always very careful when removing from the filler. Having said that, once we moved forward off the tap before rolling up hose, replacing filler cap, etc to let a guy behind us on who was just topping up his tank before leaving and he lost his down the pipe!

First thing I did when we got on pitch was to order the same type filler cap as yourself giving the extreme problems he had to get the thing back out. Think he may actually have left with it still in there!

and for clarity for the Funster community (note, this excludes Funstresses as they aren't daft enough!) the etc, etc does not include Hemorrhoid examination as they all say "Not for internal use"!

Obviously it's a bit late now, but for anyone else reading this, it might be better to use a 'multitool' cutter with a narrow blade. It can cut a neat rectangular hole with square corners. Then glue some thin battens underneath for the cut-out piece to rest on.

Or a fine toothed coping or pad saw for a very detailed cut as a multitool can sometimes run away with you!
You also need to be very careful about what's directly under the floor.

I use one of these when I’m filling up. Makes life a lot easier not having to stand there holding the pipe.
I did drill two holes in the top part to let the air out faster though. It made a big difference.
Whoever dropped that down your filler neck needs a slap! :giggle:
