Motorhome coming up to 2 years old now on a Ford chassis so booked first service next week. Asked how much will it be £470. I nearly fainted it’s only done 6000 miles. It will get an oil and filter and an air filter. I realise it’s a main dealer fixed price. Is this approx what the rest of funsters on new fords pay💰💵
 
It's what a main dealer wanted for my Nissan pickup. I tried another smaller main dealer and it was a hundred pounds less. It may be worth ringing around.

They do use very very very expensive ink on that " Authentic main dealers stamp",other's will be cheaper but ???

I'd be willing to forgo mainstealer history for that price - to be honest I don't rate it anyway, local independent specialist much more preferred.

I budgeted 300 quid which I thought still a lot. But £470 with 6000 miles what a major service will cost 💰💰💰💰I reckon short of a grand

Because it’s under warranty and it’s a wet belt to which I have no issues but should I have any issues complications could arise
You forgot to include the " Motorhome Tax" that adds a considerable % to any motorhome work.

I had my air bag module changed at a Peugeot main dealership (due to tight time constraints) and their labour rate was £180 per hour
So a service would be £££££

Had to fight a bit for my 3 year warranty on Dethleffs/ford. They gave me a free 1st service. Peace of mind and complies with warranty.Basicly oil and filter. My BMW is similar same scenario they coffed up for a drivetrain failure after warranty had finnished because i kept services up to date.Would have been £2000!!!

Having spent £xx,xxx on a new van spending a few hundred pounds to have someone service it properly every couple of years seems like a good investment to me.
Agreed, but all to often that "properly " falls woefully short of the mark.

Speak to the main dealer about a service package, they save hundreds. I'd also look to changing the oil & filter every year too with the mileage you're doing. The modern Euro 6 diesel uses thin stuff, either 5W30 or 0W30 which doesn't like to be idle for extended periods. Take it for a 20 minute run every month at 2000RPM, that will A/ keep the oil healthy, B/ keep the air valve condensate off your injectors & C/ help keep the DPF & EGR clear.
As it's the Transit also isolate the start/stop as this function seriously lowers life expectancy of the base vehicle battery, more so in these winter temps as the Ecoblue needs to generate upto 1200 amps cold cranking which is a bit more than the 300 amps during summer months.

Finally, when in the Transit Centre ask them about retro fitting the BCM cowl. This will prevent windscreen condensation from irrigating down through the dashboard and damaging it. The other option is to religiously use an external screen cover.

Ford have designed their own specifically for motorhomes. It's a bit hit & miss, on the FB group I run we find that just as many garages are unaware of it as those who are aware.. A bit like the service packages - some garages offer them, some don't.
We've also noticed that a lot more of the smaller Ford none Transit Centre garages are having larger vehicle lifts installed capable of handling vans & motorhomes over 7m long.

The Ford dealer in Maidstone charged £374 so yours does look high.

I agree regarding oil and filter change annually (alongside the MOT is my plan) and winter "exercise" for the van for all the reasons you mention.

Re start/stop - I am wondering where the balance lies between oil degradation from idling versus start/stop? Any thoughts? Query disabling in winter (when I find out how!!) and reinstating in summer?

As i understand it you dont need to use a ford main dealer as long as all parts oil etc are genuine ford this again as i understand it will not invalidate your warranty

There's a button on the dashboard to disable start/stop if it's pre 2025. It's more about the battery strain rather than oil deg. As the manufacturers say, they fit it because they have to in order to comply with regs rather than because it has any mechanical or driving advantage.

I take it they’re geared up for MHs?
Ours is 18 months old and I tried to book it in at Tonbridge and they said it didn’t need doing until it was 2 yr old as it only done 9k
I didn’t get a price but Maidstone might be easier for us later this yr.

If its a ford wet belt engine then to keep the warranty I'd get a ford dealer stamp. It has to be the exact oil needed and specified by Ford not a generic oil. Go on you tube look at problems ford wet belt engines bring. It's a matter of when not if it fails.

It won't fail if the base vehicle is serviced correctly and the belt is changed at 6 years or 60000 miles. Our Ford was over 5.5 years old when sold and at it's final service the belt was immaculate.

Both Stellantis & VAG use wet belts on their diesels as do Toyota on their rebadged Stellantis vans.

You are safe from a wet belt with the Fiat Ducato. I think the 1.5 BlueHDi was a wet belt engine but wasn’t that a PSA engine rather than a Stellantis one.

One view on this is just don't buy a new van, where the build quality is suspect, and get a much older one which has broken (and repaired) most things already, and needs a proper independent mechanic, and a small service bill.

That's what we did anyway.

Could afford a new van, but not the dealer services!

You are safe from a wet belt with the Fiat Ducato. I think the 1.5 BlueHDi was a wet belt engine but wasn’t that a PSA engine rather than a Stellantis one.
All the Blue HDi's in the PSA's, Toyota's & Vaux'/Opel are wet belt even today with PSA's new diesel which now comes with an auto option.
There are Ducato's with the same engine in them too but not in the UK market. For me I'd still check the base vehicle as some manufacturers source their stock worldwide.
As an example, Bailey's first Adamo was built on Transit's from Indonesia hence why they came with the 165 engine before it's mainland European & U.K. launch. Consider that Ford in Europe have only offered this engine since the 2025 Transit model launch coupled with their new 8 speed auto box, Bailey were using it almost 6 years ago.

I know the new Transporter is basically a Ford, but hadn't realised their own diesel had changed.

with the ford wet belt you need to have the genuine ford oil as it is specifically made for it.
Its not “genuine ford oil” its Castrol Magnatec to Ford specification.
This is because Castrol got the Ford supply contract…..in a few years it might be Mobil, duckhams, shell, etc……whoever can supply them at the cheapest price.

It's to reduce pollution for people living in cities that you might drive through. Pretty poor design of the battery isn't up to it. I've run our last skoda to 100 k miles with stop start enabled and it was still on the original battery our Seat is still on the original battery at 6 years old the stop start has been on all the time on that too. Why is the battery load so high on the ford are you sure that's not the start from s cold engine using glow plugs because it shouldn't be starting with glow plugs on a warm engine at the traffic lights.
