Our flyscreen door string has snapped… again!!
Whilst I am now a dab hand at doing the repair I wonder if i am using the right string.
I am using Kevlar kite string to do the repair but it still seems to snap on a fairly regular basis.

Any suggestions for a longer lasting repair please?

Iain

I had the same problem with my windscreen curtesy blind I used kelvar and one string went after 6 months. I've used it before on flyscreens without any problems.
The problem was burrs on the holes in the frame. Carefully deburred the holes they have been OK for a couple of years now.

It seems it’s worth sticking with the Kevlar string but will pay closer attention to the holes and runways to make sure they are clear. Will also look to see if some sort of eyelet/bush could be used in the holes.

i have had the same problem and become a dab hand at replacing them. however , it appears the reason that mine keeps wearing through is that there are are brass eyelets inside the side pillars which the kevlar cord runs through. these eyelets are becoming more and more worn and grooved which in turn is wearing the thread through.

i have tried replacing them but as yet have not found the right size and its not the easiest of jobs on the thin mesh screen.

So, we have a broken string. How do you repair them?

first do not cut the trailing cord off it will help replacement to know which way it is threaded in the screen.

its not difficult but you will need to be patient and note where everything is located and the route of the cords.

you need to remove the complete unit from the van, lay it out on the floor and carefully disassemble the frame and photo the route of the cords. there is likely to be a small spring at one end and a crimp on either end.
the side pillars are slid off the side of the screen. replace the threads and ensure the same lenght as the old ones and are secured in the same lugs and slots.
reassemble, test, put back in van. :restmycase:

ps;

good luck ;)

This is the kevlar cord that I bought and used from Amazon.
Amazon product ASIN B07283VX4D
I bought a cheap bootlace crimping tool and crimp ferrules kit from Amazon to make off the cord ends as per the original cords were.
