The Dresden center Stellplatz is very close to the the Altstadt, but also conveniently right next door to a large Biergarten and it being a very warm afternoon we felt obliged to attend.
Small Radler for Shirl and 50cl Pilsner for me €13, how much!!! you may ask, but me being a bit of a timid not upset the Aphel cart kind of fellow just shrugged the shoulders and found a table in the shade.
After a lot of muttering we drank up and went to leave, however I couldn't leave the table without returning the glasses so I plonked them on the end of the bar and walked off.
"Hallo, hallo mein herr" I turned around and the nice blonde well blessed bar person was waving a €5 note at me, apparently my deposit returned for the glasses. We both walked away feeling a lot better with our short lost trust in our German friends returned. (y)
Must rush, off for a short pint or two.:drink:
Cheers

So are we to assume people in Germany have sunk to stealing beer glasses?

...or perhaps, like the Christmas Markets, or indeed local beer fests, you can buy your souvenir beer glass

When I was a lad, there were many Hoffbrau House places in England (not sure about the rest of the UK). You got served your beer in a Stein, which held about two pints. See below. Now, as a test of manhood, rather like Native Americans climbing up to pinch an Eagle's tailfeathers from the nest in the Old West, we each had to nick a stein from the Hoffbrau House.

The bouncers knew exactly what was going on and if you were caught you got a good slap.

Anyway, you can imaging trying to nick those fairly substantial glass under a jacket. But I can proudly admit that yes, I climbed that mountain and got the Eagle feathers !

Beeer festivals we have been to they charge a deposit for glasses but not for Steins.

On our recent visit to the MORELO factory bash there was a deposit on glasses bottles and even plates, makes cleaning up at the end of the night a lot easier.

Also saves them sitting on tables and getting knocked over.

Look out for the sign that will say 'pfand' with an amount before or after it, in your case Euro 2.5. It's based on there deposit system for bottles, cans etc. It's used as a way of folk not 'borrowing' glasses but also a great way for them to collect glasses in.

Went to Playmobil Theme Park near to Nuremberg 2006 in the Motorhome.
Brilliant place for the children. Had a meal in the restaurant and thought that’s a bit expensive.
Looked around as everyone cleared their tables and returned plates, cups, glasses and fighting irons.

We did the same and were shocked when we received a decent refund. It turned out to be a very reasonable priced meal.

Things have changed post brexit, our German cousins don’t like us so much, I dont remember paying glass tax but this may be because you were in an Aldstat area, once had a Currywurst in a MediaMarkt car park and got the deposit back on the empty coke cans, absolutely no litter, system works well, do they still have cigarette machines in the middle of the street?

Its the same when buying a crate of beer in the supermarket, deposit on each bottle plus another one for the crate. Been to a few outdoor places where you pay deposit on glass and all the Christmas markets too.

We regularly saw people on bikes with a crate strapped on the back…..they were cycling around the area collecting discarded bottles in order to get the refunds. (y)

Last year at Goodwood Revival meeting, £1.00 deposit on plastic ‘glasses’. No real glass allowed. They were solidly made though.
Special return booths dotted around that returned the deposit only.
Some youngsters doing a roaring trade, buying your glass for 50p and returning them!😄
