Fire TV Stick

Surely you don't need one then, Barrie?

We have a Samsung 65" smart TV from about 12 years ago on which the software is so bad, that were it in the MH, you'd definitely want a firestick.

Anything more modern probably does the same job, unless you're doing some 'extreme' mods to the firestick.
I dunno, old TV's won't work properly with Plex, and manny other legit apps. Even the BBC benefits from the 4k max firestick which makes it far snappier than iplayer built into our TV.

Equally our TV won't support the NowTV service we pay for, our Firestick does.

Yes, that's what I mean. Firestick is a cheap and handy way of accessing services older smart TV's can't or struggle with.

We have sky stream on that TV I mentioned which does a similar job.

This is exactly what I have learnt on this thread. Once again, MHF has come to the rescue. Thanks guys 'n girls.

65" in the van? You have a big van it seems... 😀

So are there different fire sticks to choose from or is there a recommended option or are they are all the same?
4k max one, anything less than that will stuggle with VPN + app use.

It's about 5 quid more than the base model when amazon does sales, so theres not really any material cost difference.

Everybody here is recommending the 4k max, but I just bought a 1k for an older hd TV, and works fine.

Not sure what the advantage would be using a 4k on a HDTV in a van. You'd imagine that the processor might be bigger, therefore a bit snappier interface, but I can't see anything wrong with the one I recently bought, nor the much older one currently in the van.

4k is wasted on a smaller TV. (Apparent DOF and all that)

Edit: I see signal processing & VPN could benefit from faster processor.

That was my original question!

Yes there are several
Basically the more you pay, the faster the processor, the larger the memory, the higher the picture quality.
Whatever model you choose, you're best off waiting for one of Amazon's many sales to get nearly half price.

Also remember that the higher the picture quality the more data you will use. If the tv in the van isn’t 4k then there is no point in paying for a 4k stick. Or the data it will try to consume.

A 4k stick doesn't stream in 4k unless connectted to a 4k tv in my experience. You can also control the stream quality on a firestick in the settings if you want to lower data futeher.

And yes, there is a point, the 4k max one has more memory so can fit all the apps on, where it runs out with just plex, all UK tv + some other apps + a vpn. We replaced our 1080p firestick as it couldn't cope with the combination (NowTV as an example uses about 1/3 of the entire stick on a 1080 one). Our van in fact only has a 720p TV!

I understand all that, but as the op was asking a very basic question I avoided over complicating my posts.

But you said a 1080p stick would do, when in experience, abroad trying to use a vpn with iplayer, it does work, but it's highly slow. You also said there is no point in a 4k stick without a 4k telly, and my experience (and a few others of us is to the contary). The 4k max stick is the only stick we have found that works well for this. Buying a 1080p stick may result in you blaming poor data, when it's your stick to blame.

We upgraded from a 1080 stick to a 4k one on a 720p telly precisely because it didn't work all that well. We've had no issues since. If you don't use nowtv, and stick to just bbc, itv, and channel4 apps the 1080 stick will probably work. However NowTV is a absulte memory hog from our experience and would not work. I'm not saying the 1080 stick won't work for all ,but when it's £5 more in a sale than the 1080 stick, buying a 4k one (even without a 4k telly) makes sense.

I have used a non 4k stick for years both in the van in the uk and eu without any problems whatsoever.
I see no problem with the comments i have made.
I also have a 4k stick that we use at home which we use differently to what we do in the van.

As far as i am concerned my statements accurately mirror my experience, it’s all down to how and what you want to use your stick for.

You can choose what you want and why you want it.

Elementum is the latest must have Kodi add-on as it doesn’t need a real-debrid account and also downloads a portion of the torrent prior to playback to eliminate buffering. Installation is totally different from a usual repository but as always, there’s a comprehensive guide to follow. It’s very, very good.

Yes, no problem with Amazon on the TV without any fire stick. So I'm wondering if I could get live Spanish TV using a fire stick, most of the channels have web streaming but not live TV and the missus would like live TV. So am I chasing an impossible dream here? Well, not me, I don't need it, but the missus is the boss as we all know 😀
My smart TV shows all TV stations but will only live stream BBC. My fire stick live streams itv, channels 4 and 5 as well. So the Spanish stations may allow live streaming on the fire stick

That's interesting. I have been checking this afternoon and have found that a couple (at least) of the channels DO now live stream, but I imagine that outside of Spain without a VPN it will not be possible.

Nord VPN have an offer on now. I got it for around £45 a while back it's working well for UK TV in Spain and France.
