Are new motorhomes supplied as standard with fire extinguishers or do you have to purchase these yourself.

Being able to act quick and snuff out a small fire is good practice...having extinguishers placed in various locations around the van is also good practice...I have three, and am prepared to use one or all of them if needs be....Isn't the advice to get out of the m/home, rather than risking life and limb? If that's true, then needing more than 1 extinguisher is a sure way of getting the family together to give you a good send off! Take the point about the extinguisher possibly being out of safe reach.
Steve
We had one provided on our new HymerCar along with a smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector. I suspect most manufacturers do these daysBritish 'vans are supplied with an extinguisher and smoke detector as standard. With imported 'vans it varies.
If you have 3 in such a small area, how many do you have in your house?Being able to act quick and snuff out a small fire is good practice...having extinguishers placed in various locations around the van is also good practice...I have three, and am prepared to use one or all of them if needs be....
Just the one domestic size AFFF near the kitchen, and two on every landing in our apartment block.... sufficient to contain a small fire, which most fires are initially...only then would I await the arrival of a local Fire Crew, which by the way I was for 30 years. If you have 3 in such a small area, how many do you have in your house?
Believe me many wouldn't, its human nature to try something to save your loved possessions, and during the time you looked for your running shoes, laced them up, you could have called help, grabbed an Extinguisher and contained that small fire......every public building has Fire fighting means, its there to be used until the professionals arrive, stop a fire from getting out of hand, contain and preserve.......a small fire can be extinguished quickly if the correct means is available...a Hand held Extinguisher is a total must in every motorhome.I think a good pair of running shoes would be a better option
Smoke alarms only work on certain types of smoke, FIL started a small fire by leaving a plastic pot on the electric hob black smoke filled the room, not a murmur from the smoke alarm. I have a heat alarm in the kitchen now.Hopefully if your smoke alarm is working (we have two) you should get some advanced warning before resorting to extinguishers.

Is it because of the fires they have the leaks? Damp vans don't burn as wellI know British vans tend to be more leaky than imported vans but I didn’t realise that they were more prone to fires as well.

Sorry we don't have two smoke alarms. The one in the kitchen is a heat alarm so as not to interrupt my bacon frying.Smoke alarms only work on certain types of smoke, FIL started a small fire by leaving a plastic pot on the electric hob black smoke filled the room, not a murmur from the smoke alarm. If you Google how to extinguish a small fire, this should answer your question....smothering, excluding oxygen, cooling is a starter....this should stop you wandering what your extinguisher and blanket are suitable for.... I'm not trying to lecture in fire safety I ceased doing this 20 years ago, there is plenty of useful information on the internet or even You tube...stay safe..We've got one in our van but was always wondering what we'd use it on?
Guessing the most likely cause of a fire in the motorhome would be something on the cooker and if that is the case would a fire blanket be better?
Just seen the exGasfella's response and must dig ours out the garage!
