So,

The other day, piddling about looking at maintenance so we can head out.

Went to check the coolant level. Header tank was empty. So following on from this post

I thought I may as well replace the header tank as you cannot see the level!

HOW MUCH?

Where has the coolant gone would be my starting point. The red residue is oxidised metal deposit, rust by another name. Superheated it sticks to the cooler expansion tank sides. Cleaning after taking off with a dishwasher tablet over night, heavy deposits can be removed by shaking a handful of gravel to dislodge the deposits. Heavy deposit as seen in the photo could be an indication of overheating, which comes back to where has the coolant gone? Did the sensor show on the dash?

Thank you.

We have owned it for 5 years. It’s never had a coolant change in our ownership.

I can’t see any overheating issues. Though the fan started to come on with ignition off recently.

I’ve got descaler in the tank. Now condencide cleaner. Never gave gravel a thought !

Mine was standing during the first lockdown..... then I headed out early when you could move without too much frowning about using the motorhomes for driving around...so headed off for diesel and didn't notice any wet on the floor due to it having been raining. Headed off and temp gauge went off after half a mile so nursed the van home....checked the header tank and was empty....researched as to where the leak could be after refilling with fresh coolant and low and behold..... bottom of the radiator off side......new radiator for around £60 and refill with new coolant and all okay since.... I'm from a Bongo campervan background and coolant tank discolouration and coolant leaks are always a topic of conversation.....glad you are sorted
