I'm a newbie
Hello, My hand brake was not holding till it was almost on the last notch, I booked it into a garage to have it adjusted, when I collected it I heard a squealing noise but it stopped after about 100 yards ..when I got home the back wheel was warm to the touch but the opposite side was cold ,,is this normal or should I be concerned and take it back to the garage?...the hand brake otherwise works fine..kind regards, Paul

Adjustment procedure for X250 here, not as simple as tightening a cable. Not sure if X290 is the same.

Probably best if they are stripped down and the drums cleaned.

Does anyone know about adjusting the warning sensor. On a few occasions in the past, I have had problems getting it to stop warning me, even though the lever was fully down.

The switch is on the brake lever bracket behind the plastic cover.

It never is - on any vehicle.

As simple as tightening a cable, or the X290 is never the same? :D

The X290 parking brake and adjustment is identical, and the parking brake adjustment on my Volvo is as simple as tightening (or loosening) a cable ;)

As long as the auto adjusters are working correctly I'd agree. Presumably the Ducato doesn't have them? I've found on most vehicles that by the time the handbrake is giving trouble the entire system could do with looking at.

I think my attempt at humour got lost in translation :D2 I was just querying whether your concise comment meant that adjusting the parking brake is never as simple as tightening a cable, or whether you meant that the X290 is never the same as the X250?

Never mind, my wife doesn't think I'm very funny either, or so she keeps telling me :(

The Ducato parking brake is perfectly efficient when correctly set up, but adjusting it means starting by slackening everything off and following all of the stages described in the right order and exactly as instructed. Too often attempts to adjust it involve a cursory inspection and tightening one or the other adjusters, which is where it usually goes wrong, just as you suggested!

I'll get my coat now... :)

I would get it checked, many years ago I had mine adjusted by a well known garage and then took off down to Cornwall, 38 miles later doing 70 in the outside lane traffic was building so I went to slow down, no brake !! It had been binding but not enough to show and had boiled the fluid. Luckily I managed to get to the nearside and stop on the hard shoulder.

. That must have been scary ... That's why l need mine sorted . I'm going on the NC500 Tuesday

Enjoy the NC 500, currently just outside Tain in the Dornoch campsite after completing it, wasn’t too busy and space in all the campsites we visited. picked up an official map at the Dornoch campsite which would have been quite useful if we had discovered it at the start!!!!!

It looks amazing . I think l can get a map from Inverness.. We thinking of taking 6 weeks to go around . Can't wait

If you haven’t already come across this, it’s the online version of the paper copy,I would recommend a paper copy as a 3 or 4G signal is a bit of a rarity.

This is the only way to set h/brake. Had same trouble with mine but it worked OK after adjusting it as above.Hardest thing is locating the adjuster inside drums.

The CRITICAL bit to watch, is the "bell-crank", (1b and 1c on the sheet.) When the handbrake are applied it needs to be as near 90deg to the "effort" as possible, every degree out reduces the brake effectiveness. Getting them to pass an MOT is a near nightmare as they are marginal at best. The first time mine failed, We (the MOT tester, a man I`ve known since I moved back to Yorkshire 20 years ago, and I) spent 20 min adjusting the damn things on the ramp, It`s a real Pain in the Arras.:(

I now have the Merc;.:) It past with flying colours.(y)

Thanks you
It's a bit of a fiddle buy you can adjust it yourself .. hardest bit is locating the ratchet inside the drums .....at about quarter past as you face it. Follow the instructions in the diagram given on here step by step.Use a flashlight to see the ratchet inside drums...Good luck...
Chris.

Adjust the foot brake side of drum first, then the handbrake cable. If you can't do this yourself the best thing you can do is find someone mechanically cabable and buy them a pint.

Only problem with that is the parking brake is a top hat drum brake within the brake disc, and the foot pedal operates the service brake calipers and pads with no connection to the parking brake whatsoever!

Just had my handbrake adjusted ( Cannot do it myself anymore) AT THE DRUMS ! ! !
THIS IS VITAL ! ! !
OR THE BRAKE SHOES WILL NOT BE PARALEL TO THE DRUM AND WILL "GRAB".
That is why your drum got hot, because the shoe gets stuck against the drum due the its angle with the drum.

Oooops. Capitals ! !

It involves lining up holes in the backplate with an internal adjuster.
To do this the cable must first be slackened and then adjusted after the shoes have been done.
The difference will amaze you and be good for another 10,000 miles AT LEAST..
Mitch.
