WHEN DO I HAVE TO REPLACE THE TIMING BELT/CHAIN?

The "for life" timing chain of 100 MultiJet, 160 MultiJet Power and 180 MultiJet Power engines does not need to be replaced.
120 MultiJet, 130 MultiJet and 150 MultiJet engines have a timing belt which must be checked every 90,000 km and replaced every 180,000 km on Euro 4 engines, and checked every 96,000 km and replaced every 192,000 km on Euro 5 engines.
On 115 MultiJet engines on the other hand, the belt must be checked every 48,000 km and replaced every 144,000 km.
In all cases, the belt must be replaced every 5 years.

Yep - Having a new one fitted next Tuesday --- 2012 - 2.3 - 130 Hp - 30,000 miles

I'm quite happy with leaving it 6 years as all the vans we have had have been converted within a month of the Fiat build date. Theory being how often due you see vans that have been on the forecourt for one or two years and the 5 years starts when registered for the owners.

5 YEARS

Our 'van when bought three years ago @ 7yrs old was on it's fourth belt with 17000 miles on the clock.
Since then we've doubled the mileage but I foresee the belt change at it's service in 2019.

Why on earth did it have the belt changed so often?????

Each time the 'van changed hands, the dealer(s) changed the belt so as to avoid the possibility of having to pay for a change of engine (should the belt snap) under warranty.
On top of that, sometime in the ownership of the last owner, they did it for no apparent reason.

I've changed mine twice this week !:LOL: & yesterday it was :sun::sun:not good at 30,8ºc:hot::hot:

I'd always change a belt on a vehicle that I had just bought to be on safe side. Yes they can assure you that the belt has been changed ,& it probably was, but was this the time it needed the full kit & not just the belt ?
My previous car had to have a full kit every 2nd change along with water pump.

Had the cam belt fitted today and all went well. The mechanic said fitting the water pump is worse than fitting the belt and the water pump did have a bit of a noise in it. Still all fitted within the quoted 4 hours. I suspect they did it a bit quicker but I'm happy with £200.
They even changed my wheels back to front, the front tyres are getting near the wear beads and by the time the test comes round in May they will all need replacing. The rears will have done 32,000 by May - Continental Vanco Camper.
New ones seem to be around £95 each on the web, plus perhaps £10 each to have them fitted. The local tyre shop has quoted £128 each fitted or £144 for Michelins Camping.

Where on earth are people getting quotes from - I'm struggling to find less than £600. I'm in Salisbury, Wiltshire..

Think about it a bit it's a minimum of 4 hours work plus parts and that is assuming there are no issues with bolts etc.
So a belt and pump kit of reasonable quality is around £140 - £180 + say 5 hours at £60 - £80.
Seems about £500 - £600 I guess.

We had our Belt changed last week £270, it was 7 yrs old and looked like it would last another 7yrs.
we have 31k on the clock.

Warranty conditions that are imposed on the dealer demand a cambelt change prior to sale the warranty stipulation does Not include tensioners and pulleys

The thread started about 30 months ago, si inflation possibly?

Make that 42 months😄

The £270 is dated 2020 and the £330 is 100% inflation in 4 years....

Not the MoHo but one of my vehicles is 15 years old and has had 4 Timing belts (only done around 9,000 miles) and looking to change it again at the next service, should the Cam belt give out it will cost me in the region of £11-£13K for a new engine

Hi , I know this is few years ago but who did you use to fit the cam belt ?
I’m not too far from you at killamarsh

I had the belt fitted by an old guy who's retired now.
I had a clutch fitted by these guys in Rotherham - highly recommended for price and quality.
I paid £200 at the time - labour 4 hours plus parts.

I don’t think that applies to all 180 multijet power engines ours is 2018 and as far as I’m aware it has a belt that needs changing🤔
from my handbook :
Replace timing belt(130-150-180Multijet2versions)
(5)When the engine oil is changed for the first time, check the tension of the accessory drive belt
(6)Advised maximum mileage192,000km.Irrespective of the mileage, the timing drive belt must be changed every 4 years for heavy-duty use (cold climates, town use, longperiods of idling) or at least every 5 years.🤔

The OP was in 2017, when did the smaller engine 180 become available?

As far as I understand, many failures of modern cam belts are not actually the belt itself, but the pulleys around which they pass (the belts have become the more reliable part), so just looking at the belt condition doesnt tell you too much.

Water pump failure is the obvious one to snap a belt, but on my old VW T4 I once had a constant metallic tapping at low revs that I couldn't fathom. I ignored it for a few weeks, but when I finally started to look for the problem I found it was coming from a metal plate that covered the lower half of the belt, the cam belt had worn a big groove in it. I stripped the whole lot down to find that the bearings on one of the idler pulleys had failed, so the belt was drifting outward and the only thing holding it on was the plate! Close call.
