I was just reading a post about the ferry to spain and remembered about this, so a reminder/information :-

Make sure you turn your mobile data OFF on the ferry, and only use the free wi-fi, which is available in parts of the ship.
If you leave your data on it will likely access the internet through the on-board satellite system, which will present you with a big bill. I know loads of people that have been caught out going across the Bay of Biscay. The same goes for making telephone calls whilst on board the ferry.

Text copied from a post by #Mikebeaches in 2019, I assume the situation is still the same.

Been caught before.... data off this time... I think Brittany even tell you know

Happened to both my wife and I on our first cruise out of Miami. Gobbled up 400 USD of data in a very short time before we realized the error of our ways. Live and learn!

airplane mode.

On Spanish routes, when we reach the french coast and when we round Ponte du Raz / Ushant. You can pick up french networks.

What I do is exit airplane mode, then switch off data until I pick up a french Network. Then I turn on data. Remember to switch off though !
