engine size ?

can anybody advise me what size engine I would need to tow 1500kg comfortably ?

I think you need to check the vehicle plate to see what it is allowed to tow.
My 4250kg van is only permitted 1250kg on tow.
My 3 litre engine could handle well over that

My Chieftain is rated at 5.25t, we had it fully loaded and was towing 1.2t

The 2.3 litre Fiat engine more than coped, sadly the bloody gearbox did not !!!!

Doesnt really answer your question but a 2.5ltr engine is capable of towing a lot more than 1500kg.

As already said, the more important issue is your vans train weight (maximum combined weight of van and loaded trailer)
the trailers fully loaded weight is applicable....even if towed empty.....so a 1500kg trailer may only have a true payload of around 1100kg/1200kg

If your actual load is 1500kg you will need a trailer with a gross weight of around 1800kg/2000kg

I know it is a mine field just looking at buying our first motorhome.
I have a trailer which is 490kg and a car at 950kg which totals around 1500kg.
just trying to guage which engine I require before I look into train weights

Hi.
Modern engines really are top notch,however,old school me..... There is no substitute for power,what will pull a lot,will pull a little,buy the biggest you can and enjoy cruising up hills as if they are not there. Look on the cabs of lorries,"480",once top mill is old hat,there are 500 pluses out there. Fuel ?,the bigger lump will hold a higher gear longer,so swings and roundabouts.
Have fun,just because you may have the power,you do NOT have to leave black lines on the road when pulling away from traffic lights.Tyres cost money and unlike skin,cannot repair themselves tread wise.

Bigger engine doing less work will use less fuel than a little engine pulling its heart out. Having g said that you can tow a jumbo jet with a 2 litre engine as long as you have the right gear ratio and a decent clutch.
