a class 890 hymer
Here we are on the way to the Gorge Du Verdon from St Tropez
37 degrees ambient
Engine got hot 2 bars from red, never seen it that way before! Lost all tractive piwerenhine would not rev auto gun would not change down.
Due the first service in 2 weeks at 7000 miles back in the uk. Already booked in 4 weeks ago on our return!
Driver Guardian roadside assist was useless they couldn’t find a garage within 80 kilometres that could tow or bring back into workshop a 5.5 tonne 9 m twin rear axle Motorhome!
4 hours later waiting for Mercedes to come out, due in next 20 mins!
Thought it may be a water pump or cooling fan issue or thermostat!
Could be a sensor. Engine DOF is 76% loaded with plenty if Ad blue!
Good job it’s under warranty!
Expected better durability from. Mercedes’ chassis!
Anyone else had these issues with a Hymer Merc, or any other Sprinter chassis for that matter!

Turn heater on full, yes I know, engine getting hot and dropped into limp mode. May be other problems but cooling the engine should solve the problem and at leaset get you to somewhere nice`. A/C should have switched off when trigger temp reached.

Thanks, yes but AC is a 10 % power drain at most, I lost about 95% power!
There are two factors: One is the extra load on the engine. The other is the heat being pumped out under the bonnet by the A/C condenser causing raised engine temperature. The latter probably causes more of a problem.
Were you at high altitude as well? At 37C and pulling a big vehicle with thin air you have a lot of contributing factors together.

How about leaving to cool, unplugging the starter battery and hoping it will reset itself.

It's not remotely serviceable? i.e. they can reset the ECU??

Thanks Barty
That makes absolute sense to me!
Not a huge altitude but definitely going up!
Yes if the AC heat exchanger is in this region unshielded it will certainly exacerbate the issue.
Finally got a good Merc dealer out who plugged in his laptop diagnostics and went through several simulations. Cleared down some error codes and arrived at a faulty fan.
Surprisingly coincidentally last time in the Gorge Du Verdon30 years ago, had a new 518 BMW which as soon as we landed in France needed a new Viscous Fan fitting!
Oh and just looked back at the autocorrect and it’s quite funny, so the corrections are…
Tractive power( it’s usually termed Tractive effort) lol.
Auto gun should be Auto transmission!
DOF should read DPF.
Really appreciate your input Barty you are a true knight of the road.
Hope we cross travels someday!
Now settling down behind the dealership in a makeshift lorry park, it will be safe but will batten down the hatches and set the alarms.
Lol
Cheers again!

Thanks Clive, yes good advice.

Did leave it to cool , not able to reset the ecu remotely, needed laptop diagnostics to remove error code.
Oddly same on the battery for our bikes!

So the Merc roadside assistance came plugged the laptop in and after removing a bunch of other error messages went through simulations identified failed cooling fan. Followed him 28 miles back to the garage near Frejus parked on waste ground outside the garage overnight and he had us booked in to replace the fan at 8 am next morning.. wonderful service and lovely guy!
By 11 o’clock they had the bulkhead off and Identified a severed cable to the fan, it was not secured correctly probably from day 1 when the van was made and had rubbed through cutting the electrical feed, all replaced and fixed under warranty and off we went back up to the Gorge Du Verdon. 😀😀😀
