Currently living in a tiny holiday let and the heating is pants. I've lived in this holiday let over a few winters, pretty good little set up really. We previously used a butane gas heater, it's okay but use a £45 bottle of gas a month, it also causes damp.

Looking at electric heaters, possibly an oil filled one. Want as energy efficient as possible, as maybe use it as backup heating in my truck eventually.

Any input/advice/knowledge would be great.

Mucho thanko

Fit an AC system, they all have reverse heating mode nowadays. Our 3.5kw system uses about 1.1kw of electric when it's running flat out, but very often ticks over at about 500w or so ?

Fit a Decent A/C System

We fit European Built Daikin

But there are plenty of Quality Daikin and Mitsubishi, Far East products out there that as good value.

So, I know what you are thinking. Why should I install a unit to a holiday let (Subject to permission).

Because with a professionally installed A/C unit, EER/COPS of 5 are available. So, for every 1kw of energy consumed. You can get up-to 5kw of heat output.

I have just installed a Daikin Multi-Split with "Stylish" indoor units. Cracking heat output and Flash function to reduce mould.

To heat four rooms overnight 4.5Kw

I appreciate the input. I'll rephrase.... I'm here for the winter. 5 months, at £45 a month. Im not installing a £600 + unit as that's 3 times the outlay not including install and running costs. I live in a holiday let because I'm a broke millennial ?.

Plug and play is what I need. I know in the long term maybe over a few winters I will start to save money with the suggested ac units. But I can't afford the initial outlay at the moment.
Hope you can appreciate this.

We only fit Daikin or Mitsubishi Electric now, they are the best.

PS Mitsubishi Heavy Industries are a separate inferior unit. Been there, got the tee shirt ?

Chinese air diesel heater using diesel fuel, 12V battery and a smart 12V battery charger in case of power cuts.
Lidl currently sell a snazzy 1KW or 2KW wall mounted electric heater with remote control.

Checkout the small ceramic heaters, I bought one off eBay and it heats up all of my downstairs (3bed house) very well and does the Motorhome in 5 mins...

How many hours a day are you running said heater for and how many Kws?

A small fan heater will warm you quicker than an oil filled radiator. You should be able to run a 1KW one for ten hours a day for the same cost as you are currently paying for gas.

Screwfix have various small electric heaters.. Especially if you are on hook up.

Are halogen heaters still available ? They used to be very cheap to run.

As someone else said other than the suggested air heat pumps all electric heaters are the same efficiency 100% they just distribute it different ways

All electric element heaters are equally inefficient ie 2kw heat output = 2kw electrical load ?
Must be your maths as that is 100% efficient.

Paraffin heater would work well AND before everyone gets in a tizzy, check out the zibro and inverter models. Fan assisted, you can set them to come on early morning

electric conversion to heat is 100% efficient Mango :p :D no matter which way you swing the cat..

Electric fan heaters should not be used as a primary heat source (say the manufacturers)

You will simply wear out the fan

Edit.. if you buy one just buy the cheapest you can find

As stated above, an electric heater is 100% efficient regardless of how it works. What you are really wanting is the cheapest way of heating your place and that is entirely dependent on the cost of fuel locally.

When you think, electrical heating is passing a large current through a conductor until it's so overloaded it glows red hot. That doesn't sound very efficient in 2019 ? even if it is ?

The cheapest way of heating would be to ensure the heat you did make stayed where you wanted it.
So INSULATE INSULATE INSULATE..
Make batten frames for the windows and cover over with plastic and airgun the plastic taught, get those drafts sealed!!
Get up in the loft with some of Wickes finest 100mm thick "kingspan" and start laying that over the bedroom and bathroom ceilings (under the existing loosefill assuming it has it)
Pull the carpets up and put a layer of closed cell insulation down, then re lay the carpets on top..

That being said, £45 quid isn't going to go very far so put another jumper on and stop moaning ya soft lad :D :D :D

If your only source is electric then the latest idea is Infra red radiators. The idea is they don’t bother to heat the room but just the objects in the room. They tend to be panels fitted at chest height.

All electric element heaters are equally inefficient ie 2kw heat output = 2kw electrical load ?
That's very approximately 100% efficiency. Heat pumps are simply cheating.

Question for TeeMyob please ?
How can you possibly get 5kw heating from just 1kw power used.
I'm intrigued as it sounds like magic.
I always thought that 1kw in = 1kw heat out less a little for inefficiencies.

If you think of a fridge it removes heat from inside to the fins on the back. In effect the fins are in the house the inside of the fridge outside the heat from outside is transferred inside by gas evaporating in the bit outside the house and condensing inside being pumped around a loop

The active component is just an electric motor, the heat is "The heat of compression", just like a bike pump tube gets warm.

We have a small electric oil filled radiator in our 6 metre van in the winter. Keeps us warm quite well.

I've been busy all day, just seen all these messages.

I brought an oil filled rad earlier.... Seems to be doing the trick. I thought the oil ones were better as they heat the oil up and turn off. Oil stays hot and keeps giving off heat?

?‍♂️?‍♂️ Soon see when the electric bill comes in
