End of the holiday....in the escape lane!!!!

Yesterday I saw some poor unfortunate motor home hirers, who had mistaken one of the escape lanes on the E15 for a junction . Possibly the Spanish signs and the fact the gravel in the escape lane is the same colour as the road didn't help. Anyway people inside were OK but the MH was axle deep in gravel and had gone in at some speed......no deposit back then

Funny, as I was passing one, pretty steep down hill, I noticed the end was solid and I thought "how the hell do you get it out once it's gone in".

There was one in the Sierras just after a sharp bend, I thought - good, been looking for a pull off - oh, better not pull in there!! But I could see how it could happen.

Major towing job & probably not 100% certain more damage won't be caused.
One to keep a watch out for, maybe thats why UK escape lanes seem to have red gravel in them ?

I was thinking more on the lines of laying down some form of tracks, certainly when you think of an HGV and trailer.

Straight pull back and would that not bury it further.

It's bad enough with a race bike going in the gravel, usually hell of a job dragging it out, all 150kg of it.

I heard a story of someone who bought a 4x4 and decided to try it on an escape lane. They needed to be towed out.

I've always wondered, what the hell do you do if you have brake failure on a downhill, you aim for the escape lane, and then realise that someone else is in it!

Nearly had to use one back in late 2005 coming down a mountain in Chatanooga, Tennessee. Driving a 28 ft Champion RV late one night, going a bit too fast and had to pump brakes like crazy trying to scrub off speed, never sweated as much in my life, ex wife was fast asleep in the back and was oblivious

When I was learning to drive an HGV many moons ago and no smart arses it wasn't horse drawn, we were told to run the vehicle down a wall with full lock on to slow it down if out of control if there wasn't an escape lane

Hi.
I remember early on,lorries had,"Christ" brakes,you put them on and .................. "Christ !". When cabs were wood and men were steel.
And there were TWO brake lining manufacturers in Buxton..... Insider knowledge ? LOL
